    Democracy in action!

"In the overall race for delegates, Clinton has 394, thanks in large part to endorsements from superdelegates — party officials who can support the candidate of their choice."

I would guess the "Super"delegates from around the country have already declared their allegiance to the almighty Clinton. It takes 2,382 to win, so still a long way to go.

Republicans don't have these superdelegates, do they?

Not nearly to the same extent. In theory, the superdelegates are not committed. As usual with the Clintons, Theory is only Practice's cousin. They don't talk much.

based on whats going on this cycle, they desperately need superdelagates.

Why? The Democrats are rolling out the red carpet for them.

It's funny, because so much of southern New Hampshire is bedroom communities for Boston. You would expect it to be the more left wing state.

travel through central & northern NH - it feels a bit like west Virginia - except the people aren't as friendly
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

Only if North and South Dakota do the same. Senate seats and all that.

                      • So if Sanders wins or ties every primary the DNC can still give the nomination to Clinton?

If they do that, Sanders should run as an Independent split the tickect and FUCK the DNC.

THIS is exactly why I will NEVER vote for Clinton and would encourage everyone I know to vote against her in the general because if this DID happen, the Democrats wouldn't deserve the White House.

Point #3 from the article is titled :

                              3. To nominate a candidate who can win.

While the first two rationales are more procedural, the latter two have a somewhat more specific outcome in mind. For one thing, in light of what had happened in 1972 and 1980, there was some surprisingly frank discussion about the electability of the eventual nominee:

Seems like this rule is specifically there to make sure the party elects the person they think can win the whole thing. So if they dont think Bernie would lose ala Jimmy Carter as in the articles example. One of the argued purposes was: "Another argument for the proposal was that this element in a national convention, or just before one, could provide a potential nominee, deemed worthy and electable, with a confirming boost, or could check the progress of a potential nominee leading by a narrow margin but not esteemed. (NYT, 1/15/82)"

While the process may not be there to assure Sanders cant win - it certainly appears in this case to make it much more difficult. Being honest - Hillary walked into that primary with committed delegates already in the pocket. Bernie crushed her and they essentially get a tie in delegates.

So when he wins - he ties (NH)
When he ties - he loses (IA)

Seems like a stacked deck and I am not even voting for either of them.

Edit to add this paragraph from later in the article:
Finally, it's worth reflecting on what's absent from the contemporaneous rationales behind superdelegates. There is not any sense that superdelegates have a mandate to express what is essentially their own personal preference for President; rather their duty is to look out for the best interests of the Party. Of course, the phrase "best interests of the Party" can mean different things to different people.

                              • Well there it is, the DNC is more concerned with nominating a candidate who THEY believe is electable and NOT what the voters want. Essentially saying, fuck you America we'll run whomever we think is best because you're fucking morons.

We the People is apparently bullshit.
