No, just decided to leave it alone. If Hornsby always thought the war in Afghanistan was a bad idea I've got no problem with that.

Summary of 2012/ 2013 positions on the Afghanistan surge and proposed 2014 drawdown (courtesy of the forum search):

        **********

In the Corn: Afghanistan is blowing up. This is going badly.

nots: The surge was a terrible idea from the start.

DMT: This whole thing is bullshit.

        GwynnInTheHall: I agree with nots.

Sheep (direct quote): "What is it we realistically hope to achieve by the end of 2014 that we haven't achieved already? I think Iraq was pretty instructive - we were able to maintain a veneer of stability while we were there to enforce it, but when we pulled out, the interfactional bombings and gun battles erupted almost immediately, and months later, the country was descending into chaos. Does anybody really think Afghanistan is going to end differently? If not, then what's the argument for two more years of this?"

B-Fly: I'm trying to see where all this is going, but I think Sheep is right. As he always is. (OK, I added that last part )

johnnya24: America is stupid and evil. If The GOP was still in charge of this, the left would be going berserk.

Hornby: It sucked that we were drawn into Afghanistan by Bin Laden and AQ, but since we're there, we should stay and oversee the secure and peaceful rebuilding of Afghanistan. We need to protect the democratic gains the Afghanis had made vis a vis women's rights, civil rights, education, etc. and not allow the Taliban to take back control and roll back those reforms.

Feral Slasher: This whole thing is bullshit. We're destroying ourselves financially for nothing.

        nullnor: :unintelligible:

Fresno Bob: Drone strike those bitches.

        onejayhawk: :derp:

        **********

OK, you guys can pick it up from there.

Heh. I mainly went back to that thread to see if I said anything stupid. I did OK in that one. I'm not always so lucky.

                • I fired the FBI Director today because of a press conference he held last year about Hillary Clinton's emails! Loser!

It had absolutely nothing to do with the fake Russia investigation! Hoax!

I will announce Chris Christie as the new FBI Director after our celebratory dinner at Golden Corral!

                        • That was indeed a rousing endorsement of involvement in Afghanistan by me...the passion, the rhetoric!

On to more important things...Does Trump really think that firing Comey at this point in time is going to do ANYTHING positive for him? Does he think that now Comey is going to be silent, that Democrats are going to be quietly satisfied with his firing and now endorse Trump? Does he have NO grasp at all on history, and how the blowback on something like this has a life of it's own?

There's history here, recent history of a President firing people who were perceived to be threats, to be disloyal. And it really didn't work out all that well for that President.

Because war waged by foreigners in Afghanistan has ALWAYS worked out so well, right? Maybe Trump can ask his friends in Russia to tell campfire tales of the Russian successes in the mountains.

As far as Afghanistan, is it really worse for the Afghan people? This is a society that was literally being dragged back to the stone age by an oppressive Theocracy, women we're less than people, and education was scorned. Now schools are up and running, women are (at least on the surface) being treated with much more respect, and allowed to get educated. I consider that a very positive effect. Are our troops suffering over there? Yes, but that's part and parcel of being a soldier...and 33,000 troops are being called back home in October, with a schedule of the rest to follow by the end of the year.

And seriously Chris, you think that we shouldn't do anything to help a country as deep in the mire as Afghanistan was? Do you think that we should just shrug our collective shoulders and say, damn, that's a shame, but it's no business of ours. I think that was the idea we had as a nation prior to WWII, and that worked out pretty well, didn't it? And frankly, I don't give a **** who does it as long as it gets done...be it communist, socialist, or capitalist. Again, realistic expectations vs. unrealistic ones
