We should probably make a list here on RJ of who to follow. I follow most of the guys that KG had on the Up-and-In podcast ... Andy McCullough was the Mets beat writer I followed but he went over to the Yankees so I don't have a Mets guy any more.

          Shea it ain't so!

          From CBS Sports:
"A Mets' team insider told ESPN it's possible starting pitcher Johan Santana might be out until June, but the team doesn't want to commit to it as of now and won't place him on the 60-day disabled list. Players on the 60-day DL don't count toward a spot on the 40-man roster. Jeremy Hefner is slated to take Santana's spot in the rotation."

@MikeKerwick is in his 2nd year on the beat, and he once ran a 4:32 mile, which is pretty cool.

Kristie Ackert is pretty good all around on Twitter; I haven't seen her in 10+ years and I only follow about 175 people, but she keeps my interest with the variety as well as lots of Mets stuff...

Terry Collins announced his Opening Day lineup:

                1) Collin Cowgill, CF

                2) Daniel Murphy, 2B

                3) David Wright, 3B

                4) Ike Davis, 1B

                5) Marlon Byrd, RF

                6) Lucas Duda, LF

                7) John Buck, C

                8) Ruben Tejada, SS

                9) Jon Niese, P

Collin Cowgill will be the Mets everyday center fielder, Collins told reporters. He will not work in a platoon.

The outfield will be Lucas Duda in left field, Cowgill in center and Marlon Byrd in right field, according to Collins.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis has made the Mets roster as an extra outfielder.

The final roster spot will go to Justin Turner, unless he lands on the disabled list. The decision on Turner will come tomorrow after the team’s workout. If Turner goes on the DL, Zack Lutz will make the team.

Yesterday, Terry Collins told reporters Collin Cowgill, Marlon Byrd, and Lucas Duda have won everyday jobs in the outfield.

Jordany Valdespin and Kirk Nieuwenhuis also made the team as backups.

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Nieuwenhuis will be used as a defensive replacement to Lucas Duda in left field, and Valdespin will be used strictly off the bench, “with strategic starts against some right-handers.”

So how much of this is Valdespin being outplayed versus being an all-around jerk in the clubhouse who rubs teammates and management the wrong way?

Probably has more to do with his defense than anything else. But Marlon Byrd is certainly not the answer, and at 35 is a total waste in RF. Valdespin will be starting in RF before long.

Perhaps he'll be in CF, as he goes 3-for--5 today, while Cowgill languishes in the .130s. It's only a matter of time before Valdespin has a FT job somewhere.

still a knucklehead, Murphy is healthy, Den Decker and his circus-catch moves may be healthy soon, Kirk N sometimes can fog a mirror for a month - I'm not so sure.

While Valdespin might rub some people the wrong way, he might also be the most talented OF in the system. At one point, Jose Reyes and Angel Pagan were considered knuckleheads by some.

Sometimes, these guys are just young and filled with bravado...and the Mets should find a way to "help" Valdespin mature, while continuing to develop his talent.

And they still have Collin Cowgill and Marlon Byrd starting......

                                OTOH -- what what what??????

According to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, the Mets "continue to monitor" Giancarlo Stanton.
It's a safe assumption that many other teams are doing the same. To acquire Stanton from the Marlins, the Mets would surely have to fork over top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler and top catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud, and maybe even one additional youngster. Martino also believes that the Mets have looked into acquiring star outfielder Carlos Gonzalez from the Rockies.
