  • 2k13 NY Mets: Shea it Ain't So

The 2K13 Metropolitans start the off-season by attempting to shop their first 20-game winner (and likely Cy winner) since 1990, since they can't seem to come to terms with him. But they can pay Jason Bay $19m to play for someone else.

Welcome to another fantastic season, Met fans!

Your point about Bay (and relating it to another player) makes no sense. It's not like they just signed Bay or had a way to avoid paying him what he was due under a legally binding contract.

Maybe not, but it makes perfect sense to Met fans.

I don't think I will pay the Mets any attention in 2013. Waste of my time keeping up with this mess.

Niese and Gee could be on the block as well.

The latest on the Mets.. Earlier today at the GM meetings, Sandy Alderson brought up the idea of possibly trading …

I disagree, respectfully. Even bad teams can be a source of fantasy quality, including teams for whom quality IS a fantasy. There is some talent on this team--Dickey, Niese, Davis, and of course Wright. Not much talent, but some.

Of course, being the Mets, the few players who are much good are the ones on the trading block...

Mets apparently turned down an offer of Mike Olt for RA Dickey.

Good! As they should have. Olt is destined for 1B or 3B. The Mets just signed David Wright until 2058, and Ike Davis is cost controlled and reasonably productive. 1B guys are dime-a-dozen. They should have considered Wil Myers (and the Royals probably wouldn't have done that one). But aside from that, why not keep Dickey?

I am pretty sure it has been reported that the Royals did, in fact, reject that idea.

Because he's coming off a year for the ages for someone with his skill set and advanced age. They Mets NEVER sell high and this is finally a chance to do it. They should be asking for the world because this is one of the best pitchers in baseball at a price anyone can afford. Yeah he's 38, but because he's a knuckleballer and does not have a ligament in his pitching elbow he can arguably be pitching well into his 40's with no problems. The Mets are a team that isn't competing any time soon and should be moving assets like Dickey for the best prospects they can get.

If Shields and Davis are worth what KC gave up then Dickey is certainly is worth Olt + another youngster or two. Hell the Mets should be asking for Profar. Dickey had an unreal year, but he's put up really good numbers the past few years for bargain basement money and he's not looking for insane money in an extension.

Why keep Dickey? Because they are going to suck with him or without him and they Mets need to be loading up the team with young talent as much as possible.

They can always ask for Profar, but he is going nowhere.

in light of the team threads, this one gets a bump.

The Mets are still looking to sign Michael Bourn, but don't want to lose their #11 overall pick as a penalty. They believe that since the Bucs didn't sign their 1st rounder last year, thus giving them the #8 pick and bumping the Mets down a spot, they should be able to retain the pick under the rules of the new CBA (the top 10 picks do not get penalized for signing a FA who was tendered). The Mets and Bourn's agent, Scott Boras, believe they are exempt, but it remains to be seen if that is indeed the case.

So let's look at your 2K13 Metropolitans:

Catcher -- Travis d'Arnaud, fetched in the RA Dickey deal, is waiting in the wings but may not start the year as the starter. If not, John Buck will handle catching duties until he arrives. Either are better than the empty bat known as Josh Thole, who was exiled to Toronto.

IF -- Ike, Daniel Murphy, David Wright & Ruben Tejada make for a solid group and are the backbone of the offense. Wilmer Flores is an intriguing power SS at AA and may make his debut if Tejada flounders.

OF -- wow, does it get any worse than Lukas Duda, Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Mike Baxter/Collin Cowgill? Jordany Valdespin, who set a Mets record with 5 PH HRs in 2012, is an intriguing power/speed player, so look out for him if he gets a shot.

Bench -- Marlon Byrd was added and Justin Turner returns, but besides them, this bench is pretty devoid of any usable filler.

Rotation -- reigning Cy winner RA Dickey departs, leaving Johan Santana, Jonathon Niese, Shaun Marcum, Dillon Gee and Matt Harvey as the top 5, still a nice set. Zach Wheeler also awaits recall. Santana imploded after his historic no-hitter, but should be back to his old self (his Met self, not his Twin self). Niese is a rising star, and with Gee's and Marcum's injury woes, Wheeler should see time in the majors this season. Also, Jenrry Mejia, if healthy, should make for a nice longman, and Noah Syndegaard also awaits.

Bullpen -- Sandy Alderson and co.'s biggest failing as the Met administrators was with the pen, as Francisco + Rauch was a disaster. This year they added Brandon Lyon, LaTroy Hawkins, Pedro Feliciano and Scott Atchison to the mix, but rookies Jeurys Familia and Jack Leathersitch (139 Ks in 78 career IP in the minors) may make the most impact long-term.
