  • according to the depth chart on mets.com, after trading Byrd, the starting outfield will be Young/Lagares/Brown with Duda backing up the corners.
In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

Matt den Dekker has been recalled to take Byrd's place on the roster and back up Lagares. Nothing special.

      • den Dekker believe it or not is actually a better defensive CF'er than Lagares who has been pretty damn good. Lagares has the better arm and should probably be in RF. den Dekker can't hit though, so that's a problem.

        • So who's a potential PTBN from Pitt? Could it be a borderline major leaguer, like Lambo? Maybe a young player already under contract like a Tabata? Or will it be another deep minor leaguer?

Supposedly Keith Law is saying the PTBNL will be a decent name.

              • My guess was Alex Presley, though I'm not sure if that would qualify as a "decent name".

But will he be a decent player? I am sure the Pirates would throw in multiple guys with cool names who were non-prospects if it helped.

Rumor has it Vic Black is the guy. Cool name and some decent upside for the pen.

"Presley" is by its nature a "decent name". Not that great a player, though.

Frankly, if Byrd and Buck help down the stretch, I don't much care who they give up as the PTBNL, outside of perhaps the top five prospects. The mere fact that my team is "going for it" for the first time in two decades makes the sacrifice worth it.

                      • Vic Black confirmed as the PTBNL. From Rotoworld--

"According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, Pirates prospect Vic Black is a "strong possibility" as the player to be named later in the John Buck and Marlon Byrd trade.
Black is currently on waivers and expected to clear on Thursday morning. The 25-year-old right-hander has registered a cool 2.51 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 63/21 K/BB ratio in 46 2/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level. He would be a nice get for the rebuilding Mets."

Well, if there's one thing the Pirates could spare right now, it's a relief pitching prospect, even if he's a good one. Black was a 1st round supplemental pick and had control problems until last year at Altoona. He entered the year as the Pirates' #16 prospect according to BA.

                        • From Adam Rubin, on Rotoworld--

"Mets manager Terry Collins said after Monday's game that Daisuke Matsuzaka will make another start.
Matsuzaka was knocked around for six earned runs in three innings Monday against the Braves and has now allowed 20 hits, seven walks and 15 earned runs in 12 1/3 innings (three starts) with the Mets."

Why? For the love of Dog and the few left who swear allegiance to the Mets, WHY? Dice-K, a good pitcher for a few years, is merely a shell of that good pitcher now. He really needs to go home to Japan and spend a well-deserved retirement counting his money. He doesn't even last long enough in his starts to be that term for someone who takes one for the non-contending team, an "innings-eater". Even for September on a bad team, running him out there is an insult to the fans and the start of long, long days for the bullpen.

Can you see the Mets' "long relief" guys saying goodbye to the wives before leaving for work? "Hey, babe, Dice-K is going tonight. Game time is 7:30, so turn on the TV around 7:55 to watch me work."

Classic. Yes, it has the feel of WWII fighter pilots kissing their girls goodbye.

                                Is this such a loss?
