ever watch a movie that everyone raves about and just think "wtf?!"

i finally decided to watch "2001: a space odyssey" since it was on encore for free.

"the dawn of man" - ok, i got that part. birth/rebirth of civilzation. check.

tma-1 - setting up the next part. evolution. growth. bridge from birth to death. check.

jupiter mission - death. got it. good segment. loved the hal death scene.

jupiter and beyond the infinite - um, can somebody explain in 5 sentences or less what the heck happened there? is there anything more to get out of it than birth->life->death->rebirth go on forever?

Yes, and I find that mostly to be with the Indie crowd. Of course, like the movie you mentioned, I've seen a bunch of older movies that were hits with critics that I suffered through.

Every comedy I've seen in recent years. Meet the Parents and Old School come to mind. Everyone says they're great and it turns out there's about 2 or 3 laughs and the rest is completely boring.

I've found many of Tarantino's movies to be overrated or just plain bad, but I loved Inglorious Basterds.


Never saw what was so great about:
- Clerks
- most comedies with Jonah Hill/Jason Segel/Adam Sandler/Ben Stiller
- Being John Malkovich
- any movie directed by Wes Anderson or starring Jason Schwartzmann

The book wasn't actually written first. They were written more or less concurrently. I think the book was actually released after the movie. So that could be the reason it's the rare movie that is better than the book.

For me, it's Avatar. That was a huge waste of time for me. And it beat out Hurt Locker for Best Picture? I don't get it.

Allen's Love and Death is almost certainly in my top 5. I guess I prefer his comedy in it's standup/slapstick form.
