Gone with the Wind is another vastly overrated movie IMO.
If DMT didn't exist we would have to invent it. There has to be a weirdest thing. Once we have the concept weird, there has to be a weirdest thing. And DMT is simply it.

I remember seeing 2001 when it came out, either '68 or '69, and thinking it was pretty great. That may have been partly because of when it was. For example, the visual and special effects were absolutely stunning back then, although they would be nothing now. Also, 2001 dealt with some ideas and themes that were pretty sensational.

The introductory musical theme, the Strauss piece, was considered pretty radical, too, especially with the Nietzsche reference. You just didn't see that back then. Of course, the same music was used later to open shows by everyone from Elvis to Grand Funk Railroad to Gallagher.

Similar with Spinal Tap. It was very creative and inventive at the time, but there has been so much since then that tries to hit the same funny bone that it is hard to remember how original it was.

A Clockwork Orange...powerful and disturbing, especially when it came out. The Shining still scares the bajabbers out of me.

There aren't many movies I absolutely cannot sit through. Moulin Rouge is one of them. I am completely mystified as to how that movie became so popular and highly rated. Either it went over my head or I am way out of the targeted demographic.

I have said this so many times in different movie threads that I didn't want to bring it up again. I agree with you 100%.

2001 showed us special effects and filming like we had never seen before. But the story was one of those "hey man lets get high and discuss how deep this movie is." Certainly belongs on the list as far as I am concerned.

While I do find movies like 2001 overrated, I can appreciate their importance in film history and was at least intrigued by it.

The movie that epitomizes this thread for me is Fargo. I love just about everything the Coens have done, but I don't understand the appeal of this movie at all. It's a very standard crime movie with Minnesota accents that just isn't entertaining or interesting to me.

I'm a fan of the Coen brothers, too. I was hooked by Blood Simple. I've seen all their films except for A Serious Man, and liked them all except for Burn After Reading. The reason I liked Fargo was because of the character development that underpinned the main plot action. It was interesting to watch William H. Macy fall apart along with his world around him. I admit that it is really quirky, so I guess it just hits some people and misses others.

Huge hit with me. Loved the character development, found the dark humor funny, and the crime story interesting enough. It still holds up well for me. It is actually one of my favorite Coen Brothers movies.

I am surprised to see it listed here. To each his own I guess.

For me, it was Dr. Strangelove - just didn't get the love for it. I hated it.
Eraserhead is another one that I thought was pure crap. There are probably a ton more I can't think of at the moment, plus some of the ones already mentioned (2001 - didn't hate it, but meh)

Agreed. Huge miss for me. I saw this in the theaters in the mid 1990s, and recall leaving saying "WTF was that??" Then all of a sudden it was an Oscar darling. Bizarre.

I dislike most Coen Bros. movies except No Country For Old Men & True Grit.

Tastes vary so broadly here. I have Dr. Strangelove in my Top 50 Movies of All Time. The dark comedy really appeals to me. Even if you don't like Peter Sellers, the characters of George C. Scott and Slim Pickens were worth the price of admission. I loved the James Earl Jones parts, too.

A film I absolutely hated at the time it came out was "Dune". A buddy literally strong-armed me to get me to see it with him, because the sci-fi community was hot for it. I was so generally horrified that, from that point to this day, any time someone persuades another to watch a movie which turns out to be terrible, we refer to that person as having been "Duned".

I couldn't agree more. I used to watch Fargo once a year just to see if my tastes changed or if I had missed something. But I never liked it -- not one bit.

Gone with the Wind is another. I watched it recently with my girlfriend, and we started mocking it about halfway through. Movies about horribly spoiled people who lead extravagant lives and who never get over themselves never seem to resonate with me for some reason.

It's funny. I had issues with Coen Bros. movies for the longest time until No Country and True Grit were released. I'm relieved there are finally Coen films I really enjoy so I don't have to weird out my film buddies by saying I don't really like the guys' work. (For the record, my favorite Coen film before those two were released was The Hudsucker Proxy -- loved it and laugh at its jokes every single time).

Forrest Gump. Never understood why it was such a tear jerker everyone was saying back in '94. It was an ok movie and also not an oscar winning performance by Tom Hanks.
Bob- I'm not exactly sure it would ROCK as you say it Byron.. it may be cool, by typical text book descriptions. Your opinion of this is shallow and poorly constructed, but allow me to re-craft your initial thought into something tangable.

Any movie historically inaccurate just cuts right through me. That's my main objection to the movie. And it didn't suck -- it just didn't match the hype for me.
