LOL! Wilpon has like a 400 million dollar loan payment due in 2014, so don't hold your breath.

Tell me again why Frank McCourt lost the Dodgers, but Fred Wilpon hasn't lost the Mets?

Because Wilpon is buddies with Selig and McCourt isn't.

Also because McCourt and his wife used the Dodgers as their own personal piggy bank, while Wilpon hasn't done anything quite so gauche.

And if MLB really wants to go after another owner for malfeasance, there's a much easier target in Miami awaiting them.

Apparently Valdespin is not in good graces with his teammates.

Jordany Valdespin tried to wiggle out of pinch-hitting duty on Saturday when he expected the Pittsburgh Pirates to plunk him, according to a person who witnessed the event in the dugout. Then he wore body armor to the plate, and confounded teammates by refusing to address the media after that game. All of these things? More negative developments in the growing drama surrounding him.

We have dealt with Valdespin’s quirky personality before, and the view here is that he is an exciting player, not a bad guy, immature but far from mean-spirited. But his trouble getting along with teammates is worth raising again today because of the new information regarding an episode that his club hoped would be a learning experience. Now, his many detractors are left to wonder if he will ever evolve.

This stemmed from Friday night when he severely showboated on a home run he hit in the bottom of the 9th, when the Mets were down 7-1.

Mets also see Valdespin as an OF in the past tense.

Let's just say don't hesitate on a deal if your throw-in is Valdespin. Mets GM and MGR can't stand him, and they see him as a 2B only behind Murphy and PH now. One more dopey antic and they likely ship him out, in fact.

In what world is Valdespin anything other than a mediocre replacement level player who got a pinch hit home run or two?

The fact that all this drama is being created by some scrub is ridiculous.

He at least might have the possibility of being something more. Certainly more than the other dreck that's getting an opportunity.

But yeah, he's never getting a shot in New York.

                      Based on what exactly? LoL

His "something more" rep has been based off a few key pinch hits in big spots to win meaningless games.

He had 8 homers and 10 steals in 191 at bats last year. In 2011, he had 17 homers and 37 steals in AA and AAA combined.

I'm not saying that he's going to be an all star, but Mike Baxter, Marlon Byrd, Colin Cowgill, Juan Lagares, Andrew Brown and now Rick Ankiel are all being given shots. Valdespin has been given back to back starts only three times this year. No reason to at least try him and see if he can replicate that 2011 minor league year or build on last year.

                        • The Mets will not give him that chance.

Whether they should is a reasonable conversation, but of course we in fantasy ball mainly want to know what the chances are. and he is buried.

259 career ABs, 11 HRs, 14 SBs. If he was able to get 500 ABs, you don't at least see the possibility of a 20-20 year? It's not like the Mets are lousy with potential 20-20 talent.

i listened to the game on saturday and the announcers went on and on about how ridiculous his behavior was with that showboating. i didn't realize he had such a history of that kind of behavior. they were talking about whether he'd get plunked on saturday and one of the announcers said something to the effect of: "20 years ago, definitely. now, it's not clear." but they were kind of expecting it...

While I agree with you on statistical principle, it seems the perception of Valdespin's bad attitude transcends the talent at this point. I don't know the whole story, and I'm not saying he's a bad guy or anything, but nobody in the organization seems to have anything but vitriol for the kid. I hold judgment, however, considering it's the Mets, and honestly, what the hell do they know?
