I wrote a similar one last month, and to my disappointment, no one jumped on it (er, wait, er, NNTAWWT). Relieved, er, pleased, er contented that the audience still has a pulse!

my brother bought a subaru outback a bit back and the dealership gave him 2 free season passes to one of the tahoe ski resorts. Unfortunately we've had almost zero snow so far this year... lowest CA rain total ever supposedly.
I'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert...

They don't have snowmaking machines, or know where to get them?

It's pretty expensive not to open, too, isn't it?

Meanwhile, I now expect to be smacked by up to 18 or 24 inches by tomorrow night and into Tuesday.

I have an idea for us to make a fortune. Box up your snow and Fed Ex it to Tahoe. I say "Us" because since you are there, you will need to do all the actual boxing and shipping of the snow and I as the idea man will be entitled to 50% of the profits.

I have other ideas too. Like why aren't the road "heated" in areas where the roads might freeze over, so they can be turned on and melt the ice?

They are talking about 20-30 inches here in Boston. Sounds like it'll be blizzard like conditions with 35 MPH winds.
I'm unconsoled I'm lonely, I am so much better than I used to be.

You really must have no idea what it costs in terms of water and energy to make snow.

the streets in reykjavik have heated water that flows in pipes underneath them, to keep them from icing over. i thought it was the coolest thing when i went there. i think many of the sidewalks do too, but my memory is fuzzier on them...

it has to be an incredible business loss to shut down for the winter. if you want to say that it's even worse to try to make snow in certain conditions, I can buy that (and it seems that CA/NV resorts have made differing decisions this winter). but it's a complex business decision, hence the varying approaches.

I bought 2 20 pound bags of bird seed and 3 things of bread. that's how I prepare for snowstorms. until spring I'll dig out an area of my yard and dump the seed on the ground. the bread is just to get all the customers to come. the more different birds the safer it seems. it's proportional. I even get 2 different types of woodpeckers. bluejays are actually careful around woodpeckers. which I never knew.

come to think of it, I built bird houses one year and got a lot of house sparrows, and I don't think I've seen one since. so I have to do it if I want to keep my place bird diverse. the winter here will wipe out a species or two in the area. house sparrows are tough, but they only venture 7 miles from where they are born. that was fun tho. I built like 7 houses and six of them moved in that year. really pissed off my 2 cats that year. I caught my angel about to rip out the next of my favorite bird. those birds moved on quickly once their young hatched. I never did see them again after.

it's the extreme conditions that draws them together and causes them to all get along. it's enough to keep a cat in the window interested during the winter. like little feline scientists they are like look how these guys survive and act during the winter. this year I also have like 5 doves. which I didn't have last year. doves draws all the other birds. if it's safe for a dove it's safe for everyone.

it's also my small way to show my neighbors I care.

Umm... I am pretty sure your cat wants to eat the birds. They are thinking how do I get me one of those.

Oh, by the way I sent you a pm. Take a look.

I think it is the "half open" that kills them, make the snow, staff up, and then have no one show up is the huge expense
