This should have been on my list.
Free - Heartbreaker (1973)
Their final album and not one of their more popular ones, it's extremely emotionally resonant; a feeling of mental, spiritual and sonic heaviness pervades throughout. (Guitarist Paul Kossoff's health problems probably have something to do with this.) "Wishing Well" and the title track are two of Paul Rodgers' very finest performances. "Easy on My Soul" is a sublime plea for relief.

Originally posted by Erik View PostAside from the Isleys and Aretha, I see all of these acts as singles artists. Or, in Scott-Heron's case, just as interested in spoken word as in music, which isn't my thing over the course of a full album.
Fun fact: Bill Withers and his wife met at a Gil Scott-Heron concert.
Maybe it's a thing?

Here are a few I almost picked but just couldn't quite justify:
Suicide - S/T
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Can - Ege Bamyasi
Moody Blues - Every Good Boy Deserves Favour
The Faces - A Nod Is as Good as a Wink ... to a Blind Horse
Almost pulled the trigger on Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap as well but decided to go with Deep Purple as my last hard rock inclusion instead.

There was a ton of stuff I wanted on my roster, but you can't have everything. It pretty much boiled down to what I was listening to at the time. Here's a few that were almost selected at one point or another.
Joe Cocker - "Joe Cocker" or "Mad Dogs & Englishmen"
Free - "Free at Last" or "Free Live!"
Tower of Power - "Tower of Power"
Taj Mahal - "Happy Just to Be Like I Am"
Temptations - "All Directions"
Rare Earth - "In Concert"
Johnny Winter - "Live: Johnny Winter And" (Best version of Jumpin Jack Flash ever.)
Dave Mason - "Dave Mason"
Leon Russell - "Carney"
Black Oak Arkansas - "Black Oak Arkansas"
Freddie King - "Woman Across the River" (or one of the other two Shelter releases)
Harry Nilsson - "Nilsson Schmilsson"
Mountain - "Climbing!"
Pure Prairie League - "Bustin' Out"
Leon Redbone - "Double Time"
Robert Palmer - "Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley" (or "Pressure Drop" for the cover)
