  • I think the hurting Akin has put and is continuing to put on the GOP is really bad. In fact, not only do I think it swings the race back to McCaskill, negating a GOP pickup in the Senate, but it will put Missouri legitimately in play for Obama, as well. That's the one state he lost in 2008 that he now has a legitimate shot at taking in 2012.

    • I think you have it right. As bad as it was, he could have salvaged something. His continued stance is the real problem, both for him and the Republican party.

Obama is another issue. There was no Democrat organizational buildup in Missouri. It appears the DNC did not choose to contest the state. So there is only the state supported resources to work with if they want to make a run.

The fallout has settled, Jay, and it's given Mitch McConnell a bad case of radiation sickness, lol.

          • It really is amazing at the way the GOP keeps trying to gift the Senate to the Dems for another couple of terms. First it was the self-inflicted losses in Delaware and Nevada in 2010 on a night when the country overwhelmingly emasculated the President and now Akin turns a pretty likely win into a crushing defeat AND puts Missouri back into play for the President (not that I believe he'll need it).
            its great political theater.

It should be noted that Akin was backed by the dems. Its possible that without their support he wouldnt be the gop candidate. I think one or both of his repub opponents were favored by the tea party.

Thanks for the link--I wasn't really following this race until Akin's comments.

Of course he was... did you actually read the article? HE was backed because he was clearly the guy that McCaskill could most easily defeat, lol. Some quotes...

"Senate Democrats got exactly what they wanted in Missouri on Tuesday night. Now comes the hard part.

Republican Rep. Todd Akin’s primary victory clearly boosted vulnerable Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill’s survival odds this fall"

"There’s a reason why Democrats spent over $1.5 million trying to help Akin win his three-way primary. He was the most conservative candidate in the field — and the most unpredictable one. He shook up his campaign staff late last year. He recently released a head-scratching and jumbled campaign ad. And Democrats have already launched a microsite highlighting his controversial statements that won’t play well with moderates. (“America has got the equivalent of the stage III cancer of socialism because the federal government is tampering in all kinds of stuff it has no business tampering in,” Akin once said.)"
"There is involved in this struggle the question whether your children and my children shall enjoy the privileges we have enjoyed. I say this in order to impress upon you, if you are not already so impressed, that no small matter should divert us from our great purpose. "

See Silver's own ccomments on the "Fog of Polling." Even 89% is no done deal. In mid October, that would be different.

They voted already? I had not heard. Most states dont vote til November. Could you cite the results, please?

No it has not settled. It barely got stirred up. I give you that McConnell wants Akin to go away, but that was true 6 months ago.

If true, figuratively or literally, that is cause for rejoicing. McConnell is an expert at using the arcane rules of the Senate but is otherwise useless. Is there a more motley crew anywhere than the Speaker and Minority Leader of the House and Majority and Minority Leaders of the Senate? To those who rightly or wrongly criticize the people we elect to the leadership of the Executive Branch, I offer the "leadership" the Legislative Branch has chosen for itself.

Well what did those damn veterans do to deserve this bill?

It's not like they sacrificed anything important in their lives..unlike those Senators that face danger everytime they go to their summer home or cruise on their yachts....
