If DMT didn't exist we would have to invent it. There has to be a weirdest thing. Once we have the concept weird, there has to be a weirdest thing. And DMT is simply it.

            1.05 - The Waiting (Hard Promises, 1981)

I don't know what should be picked here. Probably not this one, but it's my #1 all-time favorite Tom Petty jam, so I'm taking it.

It's so basic, but so gorgeous. That intro still gives me chills every time I hear it. I don't know why I love it as much as I do. I just do.

Here's a pretty cool little snippet about The Waiting from the documentary:

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."
"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master - that's all."

              1.06 Breakdown (s/t album, 1976)

One of the first Petty songs that really struck me, this is full of sinewy goodness. The first single from his first album, it was his first top 40 hit and introduced the world to his genius. The live version on Pack Up the Plantation features the crowd singing for most of the time, with Petty laying back bemused. Some people found this annoying but I always considered it an example of his charm.

2.02 Runnin' Down a Dream (Full Moon Fever, 1989)

This is one of three songs I wanted here, none of which would have made it back to me*. Since I went '70s in the first round I'll go '80s now and finish off the big trifecta from Full Moon Fever. One of his best rockers, just as exhilarating now as it was in 1989. I played the hell out of Full Moon Fever in college.

                    * ETA: I was wrong about this.

Oh, Erik, you bastard, Running Down A Dream was almost mine! These Erik/Gaffer turns are going to be brutal. However, probably foolishly, I'm gonna sit on my next secret favorite for a couple rounds because I think I can get away with it. And so...

2.03 - Learning To Fly (Into The Great Wide Open, 1991)

Everything I said about The Waiting applies - basic, gorgeous, etc. He makes writing a classic song seem so simple.

I love when he plays it solo on his acoustic, stripping the gloss off the studio recording to reveal the emotional power underneath:

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."

What can I say, I'm a sucker for sitar. And the video is an all-time classic.
