I know of 3 or 4 good posters who have left because of the general overall move to the snark side. Another couple that remain but did consider leaving. This place would take a hit if they left.
It is too important to me to just let is fade away or even get damaged.
It wasn't long ago that we were having a pretty strong discussion about message boards in general and how to increase members at RJ. Maybe a good start would be to not lose the members we have.

I will never understand why someone wouldn't go out of their way to disprove something false said about them. If you're falsely accused, truth will triumph and you will be vindicated.
On the flip side if you are racist, willfully ignorant or any of the other bad comments you feel might drive someone away, is that the person who points it out's fault or yours for not being accountable for who you are and your unwillingness to do anything to change? Or are we supposed to accept these behaviors and just allow people to go on being ignorant, racist and other behaviors which are I believe are just as detrimental to this site and society in general?
Seriously Gregg which is more damaging? If I whisper my wicked marching orders into the ether with no regard to where or how they may bear fruit, I am blameless should a broken spirit carry those orders out upon the innocent, for it was not my hand that took the action merely my lips which let slip their darkest wish. ~Daniel Devereaux 2011

This was not defending trolls or bigots. This is about not calling people stupid because they disagree with you or are in the minority of popular sentiment on this site.
B-Fly and I used to have some pretty good debates without ever once insulting each other. Bob and I not so much.
And if you can't see my point you are a stupid, ignorant puss ball...hey this is fun...jackass know it all stubborn arrogant hypocrite.

There will always be those who get their jollies from meanness. There is no way being nice brings down this board.

FWIW I can see your point so I am not stupid and ignorant. I disagree with it and you haven't provided me ample evidence that being nice is the way to go. Do so and I am open to changing my mind.
I am a know it all stubborn, arrogant jackass at times however I am Never hypocritical.

It's no secret that I'm not a big PapaDeuce fan. When he came back to RJ it actually led to me taking a break from the site because the board just became filled with what I personally deemed as pointless drivel. Could I skip it and not read it? Of course...but over time it just seemed like 60-80% was PD's schtick.
It's very important to protect what we have as we have some great minds here, but I'd rather have 1 poster who posts maybe once or twice a week with well thought out and insightful analysis than I would have 10 PDs who just posts whatever random thoughts that cross their mind with no point. Hell, even Mith at his most annoying at least had a point - even if it was insane.

If you think we get Jollies from being mean you're mistaken. Read the threads closer and you can see the frustration build when dealing with someone so close minded and ignorant that it eventually explodes.
it's like a coach trying to get a player to run a fly pattern and he keeps running a post. eventually he's going to get yelled at and probably not in the nicest way.If I whisper my wicked marching orders into the ether with no regard to where or how they may bear fruit, I am blameless should a broken spirit carry those orders out upon the innocent, for it was not my hand that took the action merely my lips which let slip their darkest wish. ~Daniel Devereaux 2011

People were warned and then given time outs when they crossed the line.
I am not saying you get your jollies from being mean. There certainly are those that like to throw a hand grenade in and sit back and watch (I am certainly not talking about the off color quips or ribs).
I have said my piece. It is a growing concern for me on place that is important to me. People can do what they want with it.
