  • Need Minor League Help

My team is in full rebuild mode as I'm taking over a team that the owner gave up on last year. I am a little rusty with minor leaguers so if you could quickly peruse this list and see if could pull out a couple nuggets for me I would appreciate it. A lot of these guys aren't prospects any more. But maybe they're still eligible in your league.

Catcher - D'arnaud is the stud everyone knows, Zunino the guy to get after him, Gattis isn't really a rookie any more, I don't think any of the others have any real value

First base - Not sure I love any of those guys. Frieman and Urrutia are older and got some MLB time this year.

Second base - I love Kolten Wong, and Rendon. Rendon has huge upside. Dietrich, Franklin, Green and Gennett all have MLB futures but low ceilings.

Shortstop - Garcia could be a utility guy for the ChiSox next year and has some speed. Miller will be a starter. Villar is Dee Gordon all over again.

Third base - Arenado has several years in the majors. Asche is a low ceiling high floor guy. Davidson has a lot of power, some contact issues and might have a job next year in AZ. Gyorko is really good. Flores might have a MLB future. Adams is terrible.

Outfield - Wil Myers is a stud that is probably the best position player on this list. Puig you have probably heard of. Yelich is a stud. I also like Arcia, JBJ, and maybe Marisnick as good MLB regulars. Junior Lake could be a good one too. Guys like Colabello, Almonte, Lambo, Davis and Grossman have a future in the majors but not much upside.

Pitchers - mmmmmm, Jose Fernandez and Gerrit Cole. I also really like Wacha, Sonny Gray and Danny Salazar, but I'd take Wheeler over Gray/Salazar. Ryu is very solid, and I still believe in Allan Webster and Kyle Gibson.

Relievers - Carlos Martinez will be a lights out reliever if he stays in the 'pen. Black might have some chance to get saves for the Mets. Maybe Fields or Lo could get some play for the Astros. Rondon still has a chance to close for the Tigers some day. Alex Wood did a good impression of a #3/#4 starter this season. Siegrist could be a nice 8th inning guy. Oberholtzer has a chance to stick as a starter too.

Wow! Thanks JC. Very, very helpful as some of those guys I had no clue about. BTW, this is for Stratomatic, not fantasy.

Definitely bump JBJ a lot as he's a great CF. Marisnick has a lot of defensive potential too. I think Engel Beltre too

          Eaton
          Calhoun

Billy Hamilton obviously, Paxton, and I like Owings but I don't know where he plays.
In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

Castellanos too. Hamilton is a lot less interesting outside of roto.

Owings has a good glove. Enny Romero should be a good RP. Paxton probably RP too. I like Schoop a lot. Betancourt is a potential gold glover but his bat is very iffy.

Bogaerts and Walker would be the studs from this list.

I am unfamiliar w Stratomatic (I assume its much more like real baseball than roto) and the rules of your league. But there are many guys from the lists you posted that are better than most of your current minor leaguers. You have 16 of them and I dont know if you have to drop some to get more or not. But Profar and Eaton are the only 2 that I'd definitely keep over many of those on your lists. If you can get them, I'd get Myers, Yelich, Puig, Rendon, Wacha, Fernandez, Cole, Gausman, Wheeler, Bogaerts, Walker, Ryu, Gyorko and Arenado. And that's leaving off some pretty good guys, like Castellanos, Bradley, Zunino and D'Arnaud. Hamilton is another one I'd have my eye on too, altho as someone said he's much more valuable in roto.

The minor leaguers you currently have that I'd drop for almost anyone would be Lavarnway, Vitters, Axelrod, DeVries and F Martinez. Maybe Lyles, also, altho he's currently in Houston's rotation.

Thanks rhd. So, you don't see Lavarnway or Vitters being future starters? If not, then perhaps I could use them as trade bait. I would say Strat is a little more realistic than roto as fielding is important as well as OBP is very important. This is a deep, deep league with about 22 teams. BTW, for the upcoming minor league draft, I have the 13th pick so I'm curious who will fall to me at that pick in the 1st round. There is no way I'll be able to get more than one (maybe, maybe two) from the list you provided. The minor league draft is 5 rounds so I'm looking esp. for deep sleepers for the later rounds such as what JC provided. After the minor league draft, then we have an auction for the remaining free agents.

Not even a little bit of love for any of these guys:

Now that you explained that there are only 5 rounds of the minor league draft, I'd definitely keep these guys, as they're all pretty decent prospects and all might be in the rotation. If the minor league roster is limited to 16 guys, then I'd drop the 5 guys I listed above for the 5 guys you draft.

No, Lavarnway and Vitters dont really project as MLB starters at this point.

It looks like the guys in the lists that you posted all got their MLB debuts in 2013. Are guys that havent made their MLB debut yet available for your draft? If so, there are a bunch of other guys I'd take in addition to the ones you listed.

Yes, only the players that made their debut in 2013 are eligible to be drafted. The good news is the team I am taking over is so bad that I will have the 1st pick in next year's draft among the players who make their debut in 2014.

BTW, there are 24 teams, not 22, with 40-man rosters so that gives you an idea of the depth of the league.
