  • Charging for a copper mug when drinking...

My sister in law was looking at the bill she paid a few days ago from a local restaurant and noticed she was charged $50 for two copper mugs that were used for the order of two Moscow Mules drinks. The restaurant puts a charge of $25 per mug on the bill and then takes the charge off when the party leaves. The restaurant clams the charge is to cover the cost of the mug should it be taken by the patron. Well the waiter added the charge and forgot to take it off so my sister in law had to go back over to the restaurant to explain what happened and get the bill adjusted.

I think the manager should have at least offered some type of compensation for having to go back to the restaurant and take care of the matter.

Thoughts? Should the restaurant add this charge? Is it legal to add the charge? Should compensation have be given? If I was the owner I would have offered some compensation.

Why didn't Sis notice the extra $50.00 on the bill at the time?

I think she is lucky to get the bill adjusted as the bar has no proof that she did no take the mugs.

I assume it's fine as long as the customer knows. It seems a bit nitty, but I guess they've been losing money on it.

Your sister really should have checked the bill properly at the time. I'm a little surprised they didn't offer something given that it's a restaurant .. but they are under no obligation I suppose. I'd be happy just to get my money back. But yeah ... a good restaurant would probably try and use the fiasco to their advantage ... a bit of goodwill can go a long way in the service industries.

It was a large party and she didn't take the time..She admitted she should have.

You didn't answer regarding if it is a good practice to even have. Is it legal to add a charge like that to a bill without any notification to the patron?

How would you react if it happened to you?

Deposits are commonplace at venues that use special glassware in areas know to have patrons with a bit of larceny (or whom get too drunk) in them. Vegas is a prime example-- Glassware is routinely taken and because of that most p[laces have just gone to souvenir glasses which they charge for. It's completely legal, just like the automatic tips for parties over a certain number. I'm sure next time sis will check her bill more closely

Oh, good grief, I'll be the one to ask:

What are you not telling us, Mith?

But nowhere on the menu does it state you will be charged for these mugs. It states about the automatic tips. If it is not stated in writing is it legal?

Consider it a douchey cocktail tax and move on. Sheesh, what happened-- she got sick of Appletinis? Despite the vinegar and water chaser, it shows that you're in a low class establishment if they're that paranoid that their customers are going to rob them. Perhaps the key to the problem is that she should consider not hanging around in places like that?
