Would you include the ones that partied hard and then quit? Many survived because they gave up the drugs and alcohol.

Not everyone who partakes shares your experiences with drugs and alcohol, Gregg.

Many survived because it's entirely possible to take stuff that's bad for you and live a long ass time.
I am living proof of that.

I am not so vain as to base everyone's experience on mine. I have been associated with recovery for 25 years. I get to see what works and what doesn't. I have the stories of thousands to draw on. It is one of the perks of getting to look back on a generation or two.

I doubt you will find any posts made by me where I have told someone to stop. They have to make up their minds for themselves. I would be remiss if I didn't share with my friends some of the dangers that could be ahead.

                        I like your thinking!

"You know what's wrong with America? If I lovingly tongue a woman's nipple in a movie, it gets an "NC-17" rating, if I chop it off with a machete, it's an "R". That's what's wrong with America, man...."--Dennis Hopper

Kurt would be in the etc. etc.

There is more to this than just longevity. What about quality of life? What about broken marriages, neglected children, legal battles, etc.

Fame and money can make some of this seem more glamorous than it is. The regular joe has a much harder time when the fun of addiction turns against them.

Would you really want one of your children following a Charlie Sheen lifestyle?

no. charlie sheen abuses drugs, and it impacts his life negatively.

would i care if my kid used, but stopped short of abusing? and was able to maintain a functional life without doing harm to self or others? no, that wouldn't bother me.

just saying, use does not always equal abuse, and use does not always equal addiciton. the "just say no"/ war on drugs crowds likes to pretend they're all one and the same, and that irritates me.

The problem is that no one starts out to be an addict. It always starts out as fun. By the time the addict knows they are addicted it is too late. They only have about a 7% chance of recovery.

Because of the genetic ties to the problem, I would hope that my kids would never take the risk. I have two kids, there is about 90% chance that one of them will become addicted if they open up that Pandora's Box. They cannot miss it if they choose not to experience it.

In your case you would most likely see a problem with your off spring well before they would know there is a problem.

I do not try to control my friends drinking. I am the designated driver for the special occasions where they are going to go over the legal limit. Now, I am not suggesting that this happens very often. These are not alcoholics but sometimes let loose. I do not know how to drink like they do...well I know how, I just can't do it.
