Exceelent TV Shows

Just finished the first season of The Bridge (Bron - Broen) ... a 10 part Danish / Swedish serial killer mystery. Really good. If you like your TV dark and uncompromising, and don't mind subtitles, this is well worth checking out. It's available free here on BBC iPlayer, but I'm fairly sure that isn't available outside the UK.

Based on the Danish/Swedish series Bron, which was set on the border of Denmark and Sweden, The Bridge is set on the border between El Paso and Juarez. It centers on two detectives — one from the U.S., Detective Sonya Cross (Kruger), and one from Mexico, Marco Ruiz (Bichir) — who must work together to hunt down a serial killer operating on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border. Homeland writer/executive producer and Cold Case creator Stiehm and novelist and TV writer-producer Reid wrote the adaptation, which the two executive produce with Shine America’s Carolyn G. Bernstein and Lars Blomgren of Shine Group’s Filmlance, which co-produced the original series with Denmark’s Nimbus Film. The Bridge co-stars Ted Levine, Annabeth Gish, and Thomas M. Wright; Matthew Lillard guest starred in the pilot directed by Gerardo Naranjo (Miss Bala).

The original is terrific. Hard to see how they will be able to make a faithful adaptation. The lead actress of the original series made it unique. She played a borderline autistic, robotic, emotionally stunted detective. Without that it'll be just another cop series, and I don't see them risking a big budget series on the lead character being autistic.

Without Sofie Grabol, The Killing was a pail imitation of the Danish series.

Wow, is Survivor really 13 years old? Nice to see 85-year old Rudy at the reunion show, damn, he looks like he can still kick my ass.

I don't know if anyone is watching Orphan Black, but it's pretty terrific. I think there's only a couple episodes left, but if you can, I recommend catching this one. It's on BBC America and it's already been renewed for next season.

Seconded! It's been a really great surprise. I much prefer British TV to American so I gave it a shot despite it's terrible name and I'm glad I did. Tatiana Maslany really should get Emmy consideration for her performance playing 4 vastly different characters who interact with one another in this show.

I've stuck with it... I FF through some of it while watching, but for the most part it has been decent.

Looks good. The Bridge is quite dark, but probably not as dark as other Scandi series ... so hopefully it translates well.

Also 24 coming back next year ... but in a 10 or 12 part series. I haven't enjoyed a good torture scene in a while.

Don't really know what you mean. GoT may deal with dark subject matter, but I wouldn't call it dark aesthetically.

The Killing tried to recreate the feel of the original Scandi series, but I don't think it ever really worked.
