  • Fave old school video games?

I bought a classic gaming system called a Nerdbox that uses internal emulators with a database of virtually every game for every early system (NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, all the other early systems, plus 367 Playstation 1 games as the most recent one.) The problem is narrowing down your lists of games worth playing, since there's 1000's of options, but most will have aged poorly.

Anyway, I'm pretty stoked to dig into some games from my youth over the winter. I was into some weird games, so it should be fun. NES... cannot wait to play Caveman Games! It was like an Olympics game, but with Cavemen and women. I remember the level that was like hammer throwing, except they were swinging their cavewomen around by the foot and launching them instead of a hammer. Not sure that would fly today... ah, thank you internet, there's video evidence!

Any classic games that stand the test of time for you?

Ha, I just bought a mini-version of Galaga last week. My kids loved it too. This company also makes a few more minis, including a 200-game unit which I will certainly get. They also make a mini version of Heavy Barrel, one of my old school all-time faves.

I was a video game junkie as a kid, teen and adult. But old school as a kid? These:

    - Spy Hunter
    - Elevator Action
    - Defender
    - Rampage
    - Gauntlet
    - Joust
    - Pole Position
    - Smash TV— my buddy and I played this in our Student Union bldg arcade in college. 20 years later I got it for Xbox and we finally finished it.
    - Burger Time— loved it on Intellivision
    - Heavy Barrel— first game I ever finished on the unit
    - Dodge ‘Em— think Pac Man with cars for the Atari 2600
    - Marble Madness — great unit game, also great on the Atari 5200

I’m sure I can think of more.

Do you know of any emulators for actual arcade games?

A lot of those games are available on multiple platforms. Elevator Action has a NES game from '94 and a gameboy advance game from '02 (looks like the gameplay holds up). Smash TV was ported to SNES. Rampage has a NES game and Sega Master game (the latter looks better). Spy Hunter was NES. Joust and Gauntlet both have Atari and NES versions. Pole Position was Atari 2600 which is very dated, but an updated Pole Position also came out for GBA around 2000... so there are often multiple versions of the same games.

that's a beautiful box, if I could replace Rampage with DigDug, BurgerTime, or Centipede, I'd be stoked!

Tempest would be my other game, but you need the spinning knob controller. I'd also love a 4 player console for Gauntlet or Warlords.

My buddy and I played super old school last weekend at Beercade, they had "Wizard of Wor"!

So I just got my Nerdbox in the mail and plugged it in. It's pretty nuts, so I wanted to share. It comes in 2 versions, regular version is $200, includes all systems except the PS1. PS1 inclusion bumps it up to $370 (Canadian funds, so probably $250-$280 US). I'm sure it has nearly every game listed here on some format or other.

                            Atari 2600 - 359 games
                            Atari 7800 - 57 games
                            Lynx - 76 games
                            Veotrex - 22 games
                            NES - 741 games

I Googled Nerdbox, and I couldn't find a product. Mind posting or PMing where you got it? Also, are the ROMs preloaded, or do you have to add them yourself? Have you tried any of the games yet? How did they play? Finally, is there a way to play it with a wireless controller? Cuz if not, I doubt I'd ever use it. Thanks for any info--this looks cool.
