  • What kind of movies do you like?

The excellent movie thread got me to thinking about this. I enjoy a lot of movies that the critics and even some of our RJ members would not care for very much.

I enjoy a wide variety of movies. I think maybe my floor is higher than most as I seem to find enjoyment in some movies that are not so well received. Yet looking at my top 20 movies I have to believe a bunch would make your top 20 lists as well.

So what kinds of movies do you like and how many of my top 20 would be in your top 20?

    1-Die Hard
    2-Tombstone
    3-GodFather 1 and 2
    4-Goodfellas
    5-Jurasic Park
    6-Young Frankenstein
    7-Plains Trains Automobiles
    8-Kill Bill 1 and 2
    9-Fargo
    10-Rio Lobo
    11- Pulp Fiction
    12-Big Jake
    13-Raiders of the Lost Ark
    14-Get Shorty
    15-The Big Sleep
    16- The Bourne Identity
    17- 12 Angry Men
    18- Poltergeist
    19-Home Alone
    20- The Outlaw Josey Wales

It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

It is wrong and ultimately self-defeating for a nation of immigrants to permit the kind of abuse of our immigration laws we have seen in recent years and we must stop it.

i have epiphanies like that all the time. for example i was watching a basketball game today and realized pom poms are like a pair of tits. there's 2 of them. they're round. they shake. women play with them. thus instead of having two, cheerleaders have four boobs.

            I'd probably match you on:

            Tombstone
            Goodfellas
            Young Frankenstein
            Pulp Fiction
            Raiders of the Lost Ark
            Poltergeist

My 20 favorites non-matches of the top of my head, in no particular order:

Star Wars IV - A New Hope
            Apocalypse Now
            Planet Of The Apes
            Alien
            The Shining
            Boogie Nights
            High Fidelity
            Almost Famous
            Donnie Darko (director's cut)
            Fast Times At Ridgemont High
Monty Python And The Holy Grail
            The Big Lebowski
            Clerks
            This Is Spinal Tap
Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
            The Sixth Sense
            Blue Velvet
            Swingers
            Mrs. Doubtfire
            Love And Death (Woody Allen)

Ask me tomorrow, and I'll probably have five different ones on my list. I'm already coming up with ones I should have included.

I recall making a Top 20 list a couple of years ago ... do you have the link to the thread?

I like movies that feature believable characters in tense situations, I also don't need everything neatly packaged at the end, or a happy ending. "The Thing" is the kind of movie I like better than "The Avengers"

I pulled mine from an old email.

                        Me too.

If I am remembering this correctly we did a movie draft and I sent myself my top 20 for drafting purposes.

Here's an old list of mine (probably still pretty valid). As you see, I like many older movies and have a sentimental streak. Some you all probably wont like but others you will. Bogart is in 4 of these and Paul Newman is in 3:

                          1 - Casablanca
2 - Splendor In The Grass
                          3 - The Hustler
4 - Cat On A Hot Tin Roof
                          5 - Wuthering Heights (Olivier-Oberon version)
6 - The Grapes Of Wrath
                          7 - The Red Shoes (Powell-Pressburger version)
                          8 - Black Orpheus
                          9 - Hombre
10 - A Tale Of Two Cities ('50s British version w Dirk Bogarde)
                          11 - Waterloo Bridge (1940 version w Vivian Leigh)
                          12- This Property Is Condemned
13 - Heaven And Earth (Oliver Stone's movie)
                          14 - Sahara ('40s version w Bogart)
15 - The Four Feathers ('40s version w John Clement and Ralph Richardson)
16 - Treasure Of The Sierra Madre
                          17 - The Godfather I
                          18 - Requiem For A Heavyweight
19 - To Have And Have Not
                          20 - High Noon

Some other good ones that didnt quite make the list:
                          - The Seven Samurai
                          - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
                          - Miller's Crossing
                          - Witness For The Prosecution
                          - The Great White Hope

Of your list, your Top 2 would likely make my list, and maybe Raiders would eek onto the list. I like a wide variety movies but making a top 20 would be close to impossible. But Daniel-Day Lewis would be all over my list.
Considering his only baseball post in the past year was bringing up a 3 year old thread to taunt Hornsby and he's never contributed a dime to our hatpass, perhaps?

I really love spaghetti westerns - sounds like you do, too.
I'm also a huge Nolan fan (3 of my top 20). Are you saying you liked the sequel better than the original Godfather?
