Here's what I see - it's even in your reply post ...
it's a solar observatory and at the time the sun was having a moderate geomagnetic storm watch. it was only a level 2 event. but supposedly you could see the northern lights that night in these regions.
but definitely fishy stuff. probably not just one answer. or just government yahoos being dramatic.
it makes me think of the movie Armageddon. 'there are only 12 telescopes in the world that can see it, and we control 10 of them'. ..but for future reference, when an asteroid is going to strike the earth unexpectedly, this sort of thing will also happen.
