2016 SOTU Address and Rebuttal

  • 2016 SOTU Address and Rebuttal

    I watched the State of the Union Address last night. I thought it was Obama's best speech. He was laser focused. Let us know upfront what he was going to talk about, and I liked that he understood to speak in general terms instead of specific policies (while he still slid some in). I think he realized he can't get a lot of policies through in his last year.

    There was nothing that he said that I didn't disagree with. I thought his final point about Congress and Americans needing to come together to compromise and work together on issues was a much needed message. I like that he called us all the be Americans, first. Then place our other labels after that. Completely agree with him on this. My personal example...as a Christian who believes that the act of homosexuality is a sin, I need to lay that aside and let people marry whoever they desire. My personal beliefs don't trump someone else's rights.

    I thought the Governor of South Carolina came out afterward and killed it as well.

    Both speeches called for reconcillation and teamwork. They called out the fringes of both parties which the majority of America doesn't agree with.

    Overall, two great speeches that echoed a lot of the same ideas.

    Afterward, I hop on social media, and what do I find. Everyone bitching and moaning about the other party.

    Seems we only want to hear what we agree with...no one listens anymore. So very, very disappointing.

    i have epiphanies like that all the time. for example i was watching a basketball game today and realized pom poms are like a pair of tits. there's 2 of them. they're round. they shake. women play with them. thus instead of having two, cheerleaders have four boobs.

    I had no idea this was last night. I'm not sure why this even matters anymore.

      This thread is a commentary on the speech and the interest it generated. The GOP sent out the 3rd string for rebuttal.

        my son tried to get me to bet him that Obama would not say "The State of Union is Strong", and he didn't, until the very last line....

          Funny how the call to work together, especially in regards to Congress, always seems to come when the President and Congress don't all align to the same party.
          Considering his only baseball post in the past year was bringing up a 3 year old thread to taunt Hornsby and he's never contributed a dime to our hatpass, perhaps?

            The "3rd string" had her speech vetted heavily by the NRC and by Republican Congressional leaders. Makes it hard to consider her the third string, doesn't it, when she's throwing pitches they are calling from the bench?

              I think this is a very thoughtful analysis, and one that captures the intellectual and emotional essence of both speeches. There's nothing more I would add. Good work.
