  • I asked a kid graduating from High school.......

what 1% of 100 is... The answer was - I dont know.

I am seriously concerned about our educational system. Common Core is a suck!
It is wrong and ultimately self-defeating for a nation of immigrants to permit the kind of abuse of our immigration laws we have seen in recent years and we must stop it.

your sampling method is probably flawed

BG, blaming Common Core for the fact that our kids are idiots is an easy way for us to escape blame. But it just doesn't stand up when you consider that our adults are idiots, too. They grew up in the "good old days", when teachers decided what to teach, and parents didn't mess with them none.

How do you think random 60-year olds would do in a general knowledge test against random high school seniors?

I'm pretty sure my fourth grader could answer that correctly.

What does Common Core have to do with it?

            Buzz word.

Could be that the graduating senior just doesn't want to be a dancing monkey and give you an answer. It would lead to other challenges. My son hates it when I do that with him, so I rarely challenge him with questions "he should know".
Considering his only baseball post in the past year was bringing up a 3 year old thread to taunt Hornsby and he's never contributed a dime to our hatpass, perhaps?

Yeah, I think you are on to something with this. He knows, he just doesn't want to say it.

I've actually noticed that kind of surly attitude from my son's generation as well.

Maybe the kid just thought it was a loaded question and didn't want to encourage a series of further questions so they just nipped it in the bud and took the easy way out with no answer. A lot of kids don't trust adults. Especially ones that ask a lot of questions.

My friend teaches HS in San Diego and said he's received these questions over the past week from 17-22 year olds:

                      What is autumn?
Do you want me to type the paper on the computer?
Why doesn't it snow in San Diego?
Is San Diego close to ocean?

They are both teaching kids a variety of strategies to solve math problems (so they can pick the one that makes the most sense to them) and breaking the problems down into their fundamental concepts (which teaches the kids HOW to tackle the problem as opposed to just memorizing the answer). So I can see where a parent who just wants to give their kid the answer and have their kid ignore the more fundamental learning that the teacher is trying to communicate would actually be hurting the learning process as opposed to helping it.

Everything I have seen with my kids learning math with Common Core methods has been a huge plus. Yes, it's different than what I was taught (although a lot of times it aligns with problem-solving strategies and shortcuts that I developed informally on my own, as opposed to learning from a teacher).

People in every generation despair of this kind of stuff in the younger generation, going back to the time of the ancient Greeks.
