BG, blaming Common Core for the fact that our kids are idiots is an easy way for us to escape blame. But it just doesn't stand up when you consider that our adults are idiots, too. They grew up in the "good old days", when teachers decided what to teach, and parents didn't mess with them none.
How do you think random 60-year olds would do in a general knowledge test against random high school seniors?Comment

Maybe the kid just thought it was a loaded question and didn't want to encourage a series of further questions so they just nipped it in the bud and took the easy way out with no answer. My friend teaches HS in San Diego and said he's received these questions over the past week from 17-22 year olds:
What is autumn?
Do you want me to type the paper on the computer?
Why doesn't it snow in San Diego?
Is San Diego close to ocean?

From what I have seen of the Common Core math that has been taught to my older kids (currently in 6th and 4th grades), the new methods of teaching math seem a lot smarter. They are both teaching kids a variety of strategies to solve math problems (so they can pick the one that makes the most sense to them) and breaking the problems down into their fundamental concepts (which teaches the kids HOW to tackle the problem as opposed to just memorizing the answer). So I can see where a parent who just wants to give their kid the answer and have their kid ignore the more fundamental learning that the teacher is trying to communicate would actually be hurting the learning process as opposed to helping it.Originally posted by baldgriff View Post
