It's Back: Exceelent Movies I've Seen Lately

  • I thought Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace were good not great but Skyfall was great. I'll wait for Spectre to come out on blu-ray - I'm not a Bond fanatic.

      • Recently I've watched most of last year's best pic nominees.

        Birdland - I didn't think it was great, but not terrible either, as many people seem to think, likely in response to it winning. The single shot was interesting for awhile but seemed kind of gimmicky by the end. Certainly not the best picture of the year, but also not surprising that it won (I haven't agreed with the Academy in years).

        American Sniper - Very entertaining, and not as jingoistic as I was expecting.

        Whiplash - J.K. Simmons with a great performance, not sure how it was considered a 'Supporting Role' but glad he was awarded.

        The Theory of Everything - Very good, what an incredible life he's led after being told at age 21 he had two years to live. Felicity Jones, yum.

        The Imitation Game - my personal favorite but I haven't yet seen Boyhood, Selma, or The Grand Budapest Hotel.

            Hardly a review, just an opinion. And you're right, it shouldn't matter ... but if mjl can somehow drag himself out of the cinema when they get on the a train in Morocco ... it'd still be worth the money IMO ... was superb up until that point.

            • Mrs. Gregg and I took our two daughters and grandson (4.5 years old) to see Goosebumps this last week. I laughed more than I expected.

              I do not know if Jack Black's overacting was intentional or not, but I found it pretty funny so I am thinking it was. The kids did a nice job with their parts with no over acting. If you like a touch of creepy in a family movie, this one was worth the time and money spent.

              We all had a great time.

              • My mom has been telling me she wanted to see San Andreas since it came out. I saw it tonight. How do I tell her the only redeeming factor was the daughter with the great tits?

                  You mean you weren't entranced by the Blake and Ben romance? A romance for the ages, on par with Bogart and Bergman I'd say.



                  Worst English accent ever, almost as bad as Charlie Hunnam, and Charilie Hunnam is actually English.

                  I actually quite enjoyed San Andreas on the big screen.

                    RJEL girl as we walked out of San Andreas... "Either we need to move, or I need to start dating The Rock".

                    The daughter was one of woody harrelson's crazy girlfriend's in the first season of True detectives, if you want to see, err... more of her.

                          My whole family enjoyed San Andreas for what it was an exciting silly action movie. If you were looking for Citizen Kane probably not going to find it when The Rock is the headliner.

                          • The wifey talked me into renting Inside Out last night. Of all the animated movies I've seen over the last 15 years or so this was probably the most brilliant idea-wise. The story still followed the usual Disney/Pixar model so there weren't a lot of surprising plot developments or anything, but the interactions between the emotions in the girl's head were extremely well done and the voice acting was all top-notch.

                                I get it, but the plot besides the earthquake could have been less eye-rollingly middling.


                                Saturday, I finally saw 'Entourage." I was a fan of the show, at least for the first few seasons, and this flick showed why I started to tail off. It had less of a plot than San Andreas, and just served as a vehicle to show more T&A then they did on HBO, and make it a "Where's Waldo" of celebrity cameos.

                                Entourage was great when it was exactly that -- about the broke hangers-on of a budding movie star, who depended on him to take care of them. But when the hangers-on started to become more successful than the movie star in his own right, the show lost its appeal. One scene from the movie summed it up perfectly -- when Vincent Chase directed movie was going over-budget by $15m, Turtle offered to pony up $8m of his own money, and E attempted to pony up $5m of his.
