  • Pompeii - I really enjoyed this. The story is really corny and predictable, and some of the dialogue and acting are really naff (Kiefer Sutherland's overacting falls into the "so good it's bad" category). But the detailed recreation of Pompeii, the harbour and the villa, and the special effects when **SPOILER ALERT** the volcano goes boom are amazing ... some decent combat sequences also ... Jon Snow looks seriously fast with a blade.

    Also, short and sweet.

    • Blue Is The Warmest Colour - amazing. All future coming of age dramas are going to look totally lame when put alongside this. The 2 leads are superb, in particular Adele Exarchopoulos. Not one to watch with the kids ... some of the most explicit sex scenes you're likely to see on a mainstream movie. Amazingly snubbed by the Oscars for all the main awards (and ineligible for the foreign language slot because of release date issues). Both leads deserved a straight nomination, and Adele really should have won ... yet nada. Best movie I've seen in a long time.

      • Godzilla.....I grew up loving Godzilla, but this didn't really do it for me, if you liked Pacific Rim, you'll love this.

Pacific Rim was basically plotless Kaiju-porn, Godzilla had a story to it...

I think I'll still see it despite the bad reviews (25% on RT). I was hoping for a bit more than Pacific Rim though ... the Australian accents alone give me the night terrors!

Also saw Captain Phillips on a plane today. Very tense pretty much all the way through and very similar in tone to another Greengrass true life movie that I loved, United 93. Tom Hanks and the Somalian dude were both great and I was glad to hear they didn't Hollywoodize the story much.
Agree on both. Anchorman 2 was friggin' terrible (except for the RV overturning scene, which was hysterical).

                • This weekend, saw "Million-Dollar Arm" about the 2 kids from India that entered a contest and got MLB contracts. It was enjoyable and you dont have to be a baseball fan to enjoy it. Probably wont win awards but I thought it was well-done. And according to the actual people portrayed, it was about 80% historically accurate.

                          hmm... I preferred Pacific Rim.

? Godzilla is at 73% on rotten tomatoes. Is there a US version and a UK version of RT?

Yeah, but i thought they had the same score. Maybe I was looking at the wrong thing.

We all enjoyed the movie. A little sappy, yes but still a lot of fun. Had some good moments. And while it won't win any awards it was well worth the price of admission.

We went out for pie afterwards to cap off the night. A good time was had by all.
