for NY/NJ folks: you know I am not the alarmist type, and yes I'm still not panicking.

but I am close to someone who is on those high-level medical calls these days and.... it's not good. privately, they already say even more emphatically today what Gov Cuomo suggested: we're not going to have enough medical beds and staff in the area over the next couple of weeks.

we'll see how dramatically the benefit of the just-issued closure orders will be 30 days from now - it will help a lot, obviously, but still maybe not enough.

if you know someone who is still commuting to work on buses or trains - or even commuting into NYC at all - please tell them to stop immediately. lie to their bosses if they have to. and don't pick now to come up with any other injury or ailment because...

some states may be seen to have overreacted, in retrospect, months from now (or not).

spoiler alert: NY and NJ were too slow, as experts now say is all but certain to play out by the end of this week, or next week (there will be plenty of blame to go around - but for now we need to focus).

sorry to seem like Debbie Downer, but this seems way too important not to share.

Good to see u post on this. Over reaction is not a concern at this point. If everyone can stay at home for 2 or 3 weeks until we know more it could make a huge difference

My school just canceled both in person and online classes for the next two days, and they want all non-critical personnel to stay off campus, but they told us this just now, and all my stuff for prepping for class is still at work, so I'm going to sneak to my office to get all that stuff tomorrow. I am not equipped to do stuff at home right now, but I guess we will have to figure that out.

Except for food shopping we haven't been going out. We stocked up today except for toilet paper. In Mich bars, restaurants, coffee houses, movie theaters fitness centers, casinos are all shut down until March 30. Surprised that barbershops, hair salons or nail salons are not on that list. Schools are shut down. Southfield the city I live in City Hall is closed for business. 54 people in the state have tested positive. 14 in Oakland County where I live is the most in the state follow by Wayne County at 13 (Detroit).

Here's one of the assholes that is attempting to price gouge on hand sanitizer. At one point he had accumulated over 17,000 bottles! He and his family members have received death threats and public backlash. Amazon has banned him from selling on their site. Ebay has now banned U.S sales of sanitizer and face masks entirely because of the shortages and price gouging. Now that he has been stopped, the big baby is suddenly remorseful because that's been his main source of income for several years. Yeah, ripping people off is such an honorable profession. Time to start flipping burgers and taking orders from your new 18 year old boss asshole.

Over the next three days, Noah Colvin took a 1,300-mile road trip across Tennessee and into Kentucky, filling a U-Haul truck with thousands of bottles of hand sanitizer and thousands of packs of antibacterial wipes

Matt Colvin stayed home near Chattanooga, preparing for pallets of even more wipes and sanitizer he had ordered, and starting to list them on Amazon. Mr. Colvin said he had posted 300 bottles of hand sanitizer and immediately sold them all for between $8 and $70 each

In early February, as headlines announced the coronavirus’s spread in China, Mr. Colvin spotted a chance to capitalize. A nearby liquidation firm was selling 2,000 “pandemic packs,” leftovers from a defunct company. Each came with 50 face masks, four small bottles of hand sanitizer and a thermometer. The price was $5 a pack. Mr. Colvin haggled it to $3.50 and bought them all.
He quickly sold all 2,000 of the 50-packs of masks on eBay, pricing them from $40 to $50 each, and sometimes higher. He declined to disclose his profit on the record but said it was substantial.

Chris Anderson, an Amazon seller in central Pennsylvania, said he and a friend had driven around Ohio, buying about 10,000 masks from stores. He used coupons to buy packs of 10 for around $15 each and resold them for $40 to $50. After Amazon’s cut and other costs, he estimates, he made a $25,000 profit.

Eric, a truck driver from Ohio who spoke on the condition that his surname not be published because he feared Amazon would retaliate, said he had also collected about 10,000 masks at stores. He bought each 10-pack for about $20 and sold most for roughly $80 each, though some he priced at $125.

“Even at $125 a box, they were selling almost instantly,” he said. “It was mind-blowing as far as what you could charge.” He estimates he made $35,000 to $40,000 in profit.

Mr. Colvin said he was simply fixing “inefficiencies in the marketplace.” Some areas of the country need these products more than others, and he’s helping send the supply toward the demand.

I hate pricing gouging. We get upset when selling hand sanitizer at huge mark-up but as nation most people are okay with pharmaceutical companies charging astronomical prices.
