Matt Taibbi in Rolling Stone is scaring me - again:

"Two and a half years into his presidency, Trump has already staked a claim to a role in history usually reserved for hereditary monarchs at the end of a line of inbreeding. Historians will list him somewhere between Vlad the Impaler and France’s Charles VI, who thought his buttocks were made of glass."

"History will judge us harshly for this, and will look with particular venom at Trump’s political opponents in both parties, who over the years were unable to win popularity contests against a man most people would not leave alone with a decent wristwatch, let alone their children.

"Trump’s original destiny was the destruction of the Republicans as a viable entity in modern American politics. Then he ran a general election like he was trying to lose, and won. Now his legacy is the spectacular end of America’s fragile racial consensus.

"Ten years ago, an African American won the White House in a landslide; today, the president is somewhere between a Klansman and Jimmy the Greek."

"Trump takes the lectern. His hair has visibly yellowed since 2016. It’s an amazing, unnatural color, like he was electrocuted in French’s mustard. His neckless physique is likewise a wonder. He looks like he ate Nancy Pelosi."

    and

"The average American likes meat, sports, money, porn, cars, cartoons, and shopping. Less popular: socialism, privilege-checking, and the world ending in 10 years. Ironically, perhaps because of Trump, Democratic Party rhetoric in 2020 is relentlessly negative about the American experience. Every speech is a horror story about synagogue massacres or people dying without insulin or atrocities at the border. Republicans who used to complain about liberals “apologizing for America” were being silly, but 2020 Democrats sound like escapees from the Killing Fields."

"Trump’s 2016 victory only happened with a slew of unwitting accomplices. Republicans split the primary vote, Democrats nominated a high-negatives insider, and the media not only tossed to Trump billions of dollars in free coverage, but also constantly validated his mockery with snooty mis-predictions. A child knows not to fall for the pull-my-finger joke a second time. But the assembled brainpower of institutional America seems determined to clear a path for Trump by playing straight man again."

    • But, "the market will collapse if you don't vote for me" or "the brown people are invading" or "they're coming to take your guns" or "Make America Great AGAIN" or "Jews have betrayed their country" aren't scare techniques or relentlessly negative?

      • ah, the dreaded "whataboutism"

that's all you get from the excerpts? (and please read the whole thing if you have time)

that's exactly why I am scared

there were two interesting takes from a political panel on MSNBC yesterday (which is about three more than any of these channels' panels usually have):

        - yes, the 100,000+ Rust Belt residents who voted twice for Obama and then went for Trump are worth chasing, but so are even more casual Democrats, independents, and conservatives who had no interest in Trump but skipped voting because the opponent was so uninspiring in 2016.

        - voters like these "don't want any trouble." they don't like Trump, and they don't like revolution like his is. if the alternative is a different revolution, they may well figure - 'well, I make more money now than I did 4 years ago, my relatives aren't unemployed anymore, and the last thing I need after one revolution is another one. it's too damn exhausting.' so they stay home again.

then everyone gets to complain about how stupid these people are - and that's way more fun than winning, anyway.

and the problem in 2016 wasn't "wait, we ran a safe candidate and lost - so why that again?"

but it's not that she was "safe" as much as she was terrible.

so if a flailing Biden gets picked, yes the Dems could lose again that way, also.

but if someone less revolutionary and exhausting and more vibrant emerges, that strikes me as the best-case scenario.

"free health care for illegal immigrants" may be a noble cause - but it strikes me as political suicide in the Rust Belt and other swing states.

            • Grandpa Biden looked full of confidence and gusto today, as he spoke of his fondness for the city of Keene, I mean, how could you not love Vermont? The problem? He was in New Hampshire.

How many of these daily lowlights will it take for you guys to admit Biden is a surefire loser and clearly losing his marbles? When is the last time you couldn't remember what state you were in?

The "I didn't like the other candidate" apologist crowd will still follow the white nationalist herd and vote for Trump.

why do you have to be a white nationalist if you support trump? Can't you just prefer his policies over the competition? Can't you be brown? black? asian? A capitalist?

You don't have to be a white nationalist to support Trump. But, you become an enabler of white nationalism when you help put one in power.

I am inferring you think nationalism is bad. From my perspective, pride in your country is a good thing. I love being Canadian. Do you love being American?

                          • White nationalism is not white people who love America. It is people who think that white/Aryan people embody the values that make America great and that other races and ethnicities have inferior values and characteristics and weaken the country by their presence here.

                              From Merriam-Webster.com:

                              Definition of white nationalist

: one of a group of militant whites who espouse white supremacy and advocate enforced racial segregation
edit to add: I find it both ironic and funny that i got a popup window/warning from that Merriam-Webster page trying to get me to click on some malware to save my computer files. Somebody doesn't like it when people read/cut/paste the definition of white nationalism lol.
