Great read on how Gwynn approached facing Maddux and Glavine.

Younger than me. Ouch. Most people remember him as the chubby guy cranking out singles of his later career; I remember him also as a fast-as-lightning slender young guy. I only got to see him live once or twice a year, but man, just watching his approach was a clinic and a delight in itself. The only player I've seen set up pitchers like he did is Ichiro.

Tony Gwynn was one of the last links to Ted Williams, they talked hitting and Williams convinced Gwynn that he should hit for more power, and told him how. 43 of Gwynn's 135 career homers came in his last 3 seasons after incorporating the suggestions of Williams.

            Tony Gwynn has passed...

Sad day for baseball in general. They guy was from all appearances classy as they come, and could flat out hit.

He was one of my favorites and will be missed.

In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

Tony Gwynn Jr returned to the Phillies last night, and pinch-hit in the 8th

those tough Phillies fans offered a very touching ovation. might get a little dusty in your office (or mom's basement, if you wait til you get home)

Philadelphia fans aren't often classy, but this was one time that they did something really...nice. It showed a lot of respect for both father and son.

Strasburg says he has quit using now. He and Gwynn were pretty close since Stras pitched for him at San Diego State.

Another former SD State alum, Addison Reed says he too has now quit.

Brett Butler got throat cancer or something similar not long after he retired but made it through okay - also due to "smokeless tobacco". It's crazy to me how closely linked dipping is to baseball, especially since the one time I tried to do it while playing softball I almost fell over trying to field a ground ball since I was so lightheaded.
