  • Eovaldi for Ike?

    11-team NL-only 5x5 (OBP) keeper league

My hitting is pretty weak and got even weaker when Trumbo went down. Right now my 1B/3B/CI consists of Mark Reynolds, Jace Peterson, and Jeff Baker (woof) and I'm especially weak in HR and OBP.

Pitching-wise I'm in great shape although wins have been hard to come by. Current staff is Cueto, Zimmerman, Beckett, Eovaldi, Volquez, McCarthy, Rosenthal, Soriano, Ramos, and Germen with Kershaw and Chacin soon to be back from the DL and Gray/Wisler waiting in the minors.

I know it's a big risk taking on someone like Davis, but is this a worthwhile gamble? Eovaldi has looked great so far and his peripherals are excellent while Ike continues to look like Ike but does have 30-HR power and always posts solid OBPs.

So what do you think junkies, take the plunge? He also just traded for Frazier if you think that would be a better option.

Ike's still in a platoon, so I'd easily take Frazier over him.

I'd deal Eovaldi, who I think could have an above-average year, for Frazier, but not for Ike.

I wouldn't expect to get anything great for Volquez yet since so many owners have been burned in the past (especially this owner since he's a Padres fan). McCarthy's got to get his ERA down before anyone will take him seriously and people are still afraid of Beckett as well (though I'm a believer).

I threw those names out (plus Zimmerman) to the league and didn't really get any responses. A decent amount of trading in this league is dumping near the deadline so it might be tough to find a better deal right now. Germen will be an easy cut when Kershaw comes back next week, but I'd rather clear a spot for Chacin rather than have to cut someone with value.

Wasn't there another thread where someone traded Eovaldi for Ike because they were desperate for offense and couldn't find anything better?

Ike still looks like Ike to me. Not the terrible Ike from early 2013 but not a .290-30hr guy either. But in an OBP league he has a nice edge over Frazier. I am not 100% convinced I would take Frazier over Ike.

I really like Eovaldi. I don't like dealing him for either guy. But sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures. And your CI is pretty bad.

Another gem today will hopefully bump his value up. It should be noted that he's in the last year of his contract at $1 so he would really help a contending owner stay under the cap and would also be a better trade chip for a dumping team than a similar pitcher at value (say $20 at this point).

Assuming I pass on Ike, what kind of hitter should I expect to get in return?

I would target a down on their luck batter like a Granderson or Billy Butler.

Butler is broken and finished. Don't target him. Grandy may be, too, but I don't own him, so I have less info.

Wow, writing off a 28-year old career .300 hitter after 25 games??

Don't do Eovaldi for Ike. You should get a better return than that

Well, it's an NL-only league so you guys don't have to worry about Billy

Looking over some other rosters I was thinking about asking for either Laroche or Cuddyer. Thoughts?

I still think you're aiming low since I don't believe in either of them but I like LaRoche better than Ike.

Agreed. Aim higher. Someone with 3 years of good stats that started off very slow and is 30 years old or under.

Wow, didn't think Eovaldi had that kind of prestige although I guess when the peripherals start catching up to the ERA you've got something good.

Just sent an offer to the Craig owner, we'll see how that goes.

Heard a guy who used to be a scout on Sirius yesterday...he said that some scouts seem to think that Butler's bat speed has slowed down to the point where he might not be able to pull himself out of a slump. Just not a guy who I'd be targeting...
