"Anxious and eager, Quai Jefferson stood in the morning sunlight at St. Joseph Regional High in Montvale, his mind racing with possibilities. His mother, Vaida, sat next to him in her wheelchair in the school’s courtyard, clutching his hand and looking on. More than 50 close friends, teachers and family members waited restlessly around Quai and Vaida this morning, alongside a bank of television and video cameras and media reporters. Quai and Vaida had been told he was being honored with an ambiguous award, but he sensed there was more to it.
Then, at 11:56 a.m., Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira rounded the corner into the courtyard, trailed by eight of his teammates, including stars CC Sabathia, Masahiro Tanaka and Brian McCann.
Quai and Vaida were honored today by the Yankees on the final day of the club’s annual HOPE Week, an outreach program that recognizes inspirational people in the community. But that was only the beginning. After lunch with players, Quai and Vaida were whisked to Yankee Stadium, where more surprises awaited.
A standout football player at St. Joseph who recently graduated and is now attending Delaware on an athletic scholarship, Quai, 18, has been the primary caregiver for Vaida, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, since she was diagnosed 12 years ago."
