Thanks for posting, frae. Interesting. Saw Cowgill at $9. Was that before or after he was announced as the full time starter?

Congrats on being one of the few leagues to draft this guy!

Relatively glitch free, smooth running, think it was 4 hours from start to finish. I mixed up my usual approach, usually I am early into the fray, buying what I call keystone players, expensive elite studs just below the top couple of names. This year I opted to wait a bit, and managed to get churned up into a no mans land of no value, while also no studs.

I hate my team, hate the approach I took. Didnt buy my 1st guy till pick 29, Lohse at $13. That is where I draw the line in the sand and make a move? I am the defending champ, multi season in money spot if not outright winner, I was in the middle of a mess. This was a train wreck. Once I decided to spend before the options were dry I still got caught short. I nominated D Wright at pick 24, thinking ok, I will buy this sucker somewhere in the $40s. He of course gets bid up to $50 and I drop out.

If I could do a do over, something that doesnt make sense because if I dont buy Lohse, maybe that trickles to what the next guy would end up at, I get it, dont tell me the do over game doesnt make sense because I get it. But If in this case looking over the names and adding a +$1 to end salary, I would buy 3 keystone players of J Upton, A Gonzalez, and M Holliday, all $44 each. Would be freaking thrilled. That base I could go rebuild if I wanted and have the studs for 3 seperate packages. Or I could go for win it all mode and have them set in lineup while I traded away prospects for the surrounding lineup shlubs. Thats the way I have had success in past over and over. So I change it up to try to pee on the 3rd rail for kicks.

My big buys were Choo $39, and Crawford $34. You freakin kidding me? This is an auction dynamic at work, the big studs were already off the boards, lots of us still had too much money left, and we were at that point scanning for were to plunk our nut. I would have not ever dreamed by team would be something to cause me nausea. I am developing a type of tourettes as I am barking "no fraking way, buttercup" to the screen when I look at my twisted valentine of a team, like someone sent me black roses and is peeking around the corner to watch my reaction as I read the go to hell card.

All in all, good times. Looking forward to year.

Gcstomp, all is not lost. You had excellent keepers. You'll like the Ramos buy. Crawford could turn out well. You're still a contender but will need some breaks. Maybe a back end money finish AND reload?

I took the opposite approach from stomp and spent fast and furious. Noticed early that prices were starting lower than I expected and thus wanted to get in before it adjusted. Latos and Papelbon were much cheaper than I expected so happy with them to go along with Tim Hudson and my pitching keepers. Kind of wanted BJ over Justin but didn't want to wait to spend. All in all pretty happy with my strategy so we'll see how it plays out.

Since I basically had no keeper list (a $15 Stanton, and that's about it), I wanted to try to get a starter at every position and load up on counting stats. I would have been perfectly happy to maybe buy a closer and finish with $220 on offense. Since most of the depth was in the outfield I wanted to spend on infielders and get whatever was left in the outfield.

Unfortunately that plan doesn't work well when Scutaro goes for 22 and Brandon Belt goes for 35 and outfielders were the only bargains. I could have had 7-8 good starters for that $220 and still had a bunch of holes. So I limped along as best I could and moved more money into pitching than I expected. I was basically trying to build a team that could compete in a redraft league, even though I know I have no shot at beating teams who went into the auction with $50+ in surplus value.

I even got a really good buy in Kubel for 24, and Cody Ross for 17 wasn't bad either, but still couldn't make it work. I ended up with this:

                C Hanigan 3 (keeper)
CI Helton 3, Polanco 7, Juan Francisco 15
                MI Forsythe 5, Barmes 3, J Herrera 3
OF Stanton 15 (keeper), Braun 58, Kubel 24, Cody Ross 17 Cowgill 9
                UT Valdespin 13, Tabata 10
                Bench: Martin Maldanado

                SP EJax 13, Miley 11, Gee 9, Nolasco 3, Nicasio 3, H Alvarez 4
                RP Street 21, Kontos 1, Mujica 1
BN Santiago Casilla 1 (Keeper), Luebke 6, Jacob Turner 1, Eovaldi 5 (keeper)

Really hoping Eddie posts. Dying to see what his rationale for bidding on every DL'd guy was. That is a strategy if you are in rebuild mindset and think you can get highly discounted guys for 2014. But his was a turbo charged ready to go beast to win 2013. Maybe those injured guys are bait for the weaker teams to think of reloading. But the discounts werent there relative to injuries imo. B Mccann $16, C Hart $25, H Ramirez $28 all look good for 2014. For this year, all pretty ugly, again imo.

I thought all of those bids were OK. Unfortunately the wasteland that was the reserve rounds makes it tough to fill those stats when they're out, but McCann and Hart could be back in a month, and those are at least 15% discount prices from where they'd go if they were healthy. $25 Hart and a month of FA crap, or a $35 Belt? I might take Hart. And Hanley went for about 2/3 of Tulo, which seems fair. Not discounted, but fair.

Thanks!! Hopefully I can actually translate a good auction into a win this year. Just need to loosen my death grip on prospects since Frae too has bullets down on the FARM to get better.

Ya if Hart is just out a month then not bad, considering our hitter prices. I actually love Hart. Eddie, you've got mail! OK, just kidding. I appreciate he had a strategy, rather than my chicken without a head approach. Or on fire? Maybe I was a chicken without a head on fire falling off the roof.

Ghost of Minor Threat still bought A Ethier, a long term fav of his. Yeah the $35 Belt was a spring training inflated number maybe, who knows, but looks high.

Thanks!! Hopefully I can actually translate a good auction into a win this year. Just need to loosen my death grip on prospects since Frae too has bullets down on the FARM to get better.
So what's your team there cowboy? I'd be interested to see what you have. And congratulations for taking the strategy of spending early...it's really the only place to get bargains anymore.

Got family over for Easter but I'll throw my team up there for feedback when they leave.

Congrats on being one of the few leagues to draft this guy!
Thanks. Unfortunately the rest of my draft didn't fare so well. I should have just jumped on Kemp at the start but was as usual put in sticker shock. As I saw stud after stud (of the few that were available) go off the board I just decided when Wright came up (and I still needed a 1b,3b, and five of's) to get him at any cost. The $50 he cost me won't nearly come back to haunt me as much as the $11 I paid for Pennington (I don't know why I did that, I truly don't). I loved my pitching going into it and decided that I would wait to get a starter until they got down to the under $10 crowd. With Axford and Jansen I figured I could wait and get some set up guys which I did (Gregerson, Henderson) and let the others fight over the few that were available). As first baseman after first baseman came off the board I figured I could get Belt for maybe a few dollars over what I wanted to pay. Then he got to $20, then he got to $30+. I fast realized that plan wouldn't work either and I would have to move to plan c (or was it d,e,f,g,h...). I did want Matt Adams and he kept staying on the board so I was smart enough to stash a few extra bucks away to get him which I did for a very modest $5. All in all I don't completely hate my team, just mostly.
