    How in the hell did that team win 116 games??

    Everything went right for them.
    Besides having studs at 1B, 2B, RF, and DH, they had a solid Mike Cameron in CF and very good defense all around. Bret Boone had his career year. The bullpen was excellent and the pitching staff was solid enough to take advantage of the good D and good pen. Unfortunately for them, this wasn't a team built for the playoffs. Garcia was not a knockout ace starter and the rest were subpar compared to their playoff rivals.

        Teams with the most batters with at least 5 WAR:

        1 1939 New York Yankees 6 Bill Dickey / Joe DiMaggio / Joe Gordon / Charlie Keller / Red Rolfe / George Selkirk

        2 2001 Seattle Mariners 5 Bret Boone / Mike Cameron / Edgar Martinez / John Olerud / Ichiro Suzuki

        plus McLemore, Carlos Guillen, Stan Javier and David Bell were all around 3 WAR each. That's one hell of a deep offense. Bret Boone was worth 9.3 wins. Bret Boone!

        They also had one of the 2 or 3 best bullpens of all time. Kaz Sasaki, Arthur Rhodes, Norm Charlton, Jeff Nelson, Jose Paniagua, Ryan Franklin .. 6 relievers with an ERA+ of 96 or better.

              A guy in our league loaded up with Mariners that year, which was easy to do since nobody was chasing them, and he won the league for the first and only time.

                    I wasn't all that surprised. You need starting pitching to win playoff series, and the Yankees had a better staff than the Mariners that year.
