Everything went right for them.
Besides having studs at 1B, 2B, RF, and DH, they had a solid Mike Cameron in CF and very good defense all around. Bret Boone had his career year. The bullpen was excellent and the pitching staff was solid enough to take advantage of the good D and good pen. Unfortunately for them, this wasn't a team built for the playoffs. Garcia was not a knockout ace starter and the rest were subpar compared to their playoff rivals.

A guy in our league loaded up with Mariners that year, which was easy to do since nobody was chasing them, and he won the league for the first and only time.
