With Luebke coming back by then and of course Headley fully healthy, the Padres might be a decent team to watch the second half of the year.
Cashner has been added to the rotation. Also, Chris Denorfia seems to be playing every day. Nice speed play in NL only leagues.

Burch Smith may come up for a start this weekend?

What's the situation with this starting rotation at this point? I need to gamble a little bit on a starter, maybe this is a decent flier?

Marquis a gem today, and one of only 6 NL SPs currently unowned, but I just can't do it...

Maybin being activated today and Blanks getting sent down to Tucson. If I'm Blanks, I'm pissed. He's done well more than enough to stay up and get regular playing time. They need to move Guzman to an American League team who needs a DH to make room for KB. Fear not, though, it's just a matter if time before Quentin makes an appearance on the DL and Blanks can get recalled.

Hopefully Maybin's wrist is healed and that was the source of his suckiness.

In other padre news: Gyorko is becoming a stud!

Yay! Blanks gets a stay of execution. He'll be with the team in Colorado tonight.

Jedd Gyorko (groin) appears headed to the disabled list.
Gyorko, who left Sunday's game with a right groin ailment, had his leg heavily taped in the clubhouse Monday and is not listed on the Padres' lineup card. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be sidelined. Logan Forsythe has been activated and is at second base Monday.

Forsythe making quite the splash in his debut. Any chance they move Headley back to LF and put Gyorko back at 3B when everyone's healthy?

No chance they put Headley back in the OF. That'd be an insult to him and they already have a logjam in the OF - Quentin, Maybin, Venable, Denorfia and Blanks (when Alonso returns) are all performing well. Sure, Quentin will go on the DL sooner or later, but moving Headley to LF is simply not an option. Throw in supersub Amarista who they try to get in the lineup a few times a week.

However, Headley's subpar performance so far and Gyorko's emergence are making it seem justifiable that the front office seriously consider trading Headley. If Forsythe continues playing like he did yesterday while Gyorko's out, it'll make it that much easier for them to justify trading Headley.

The front office has said that they want to sign Headley to a long-term deal, but Headley has said that he will not discuss an extension during the year. This, plus what I mentioned above, adds up to Headley being traded. This would be what the Padre brass is hoping for IMO: 1) They can say "Hey, we wanted to sign him to a long-term deal, but they wouldn't cooperate", 2) The emergence of Gyorko/Forsythe soften the blow (especially if Headley's performance continues like it has been - making it look like last year was an aberration), 3) "Look at the talent we got in return"

The organization needs to really make it appear to their fans that they're not in a perpetual fire sale, but the above would make it seem justifiable.

What would make anyone think Forsythe will play at a igh level for an extended period? He never has before.
After former Broncos quarterback Brian Griese sprained his ankle and said he was tripped on the stairs of his home by his golden retriever, Bella: “The dog stood up on his hind legs and gave him a push? You might want to get rid of that dog, or put him in the circus, one of the two.”

while he's not really young, he's not that old either at 26 (only been out of college 4 years), and he had very good minor league numbers (.839 OPS with a nearly 1:1 K:BB ratio). while never a top prospect, he was in quite a few lists at one point a couple of years ago. his stints in the majors have always been fairly short, so he's never really *had* an "extended" period. so i think the jury is out on him.

The Pads thought enough of Forsyth to shop Cabrera around during the offseason and, if he didn't get hurt in ST, there was talk of a rotation of him, ECab and Gyorko at SS/2b

The organization likes him a lot. IMO, his skills equal that of a supersub type (and they already have one of those in Alexi Amarista)
