  • RHD's Latest Top 150 Roto Prospects ("Opening Day" Edition)

Today is opening day for MLB! And also for fantasy baseball! And I have an updated roto prospects list all ready to go. Previous list was from 1/18/23.

The usual litany: I generally follow BA's prospect eligibility requirements, which are <=130 MLB AB or <=50 MLB IP. Unlike BA tho, amateurs, unsigned draftees and foreign players are eligible. Also, while BA has a different IP limit for relievers (30 IP?), relievers are eligible as long as they dont have >50 IP. As usual, this is for roto, not 'real' baseball, so pitchers are downgraded some, catchers downgraded somewhat (unless they're elite prospects and their bat will play at any position), actual closers are upgraded a lot, SB guys who project to get playing time get upgraded some, and guys who either currently are or project to soon be regulars can get upgraded quite a bit. Position listed is their current primary one to the best of my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong), not the one they're likely to end up at.

Thanx, as always, for the response, Sharky.

He's definitely on my radar and not too far off the list (currently #178).

Rhd, is Moises Gomez a quad-A player or is there something there? He did lead the minors in HR last year as a 24-yo. Trying to figure out if worth a shot.

Also: Pfaadt, Abel, Stone ranked in a cluster. Which one do you think has biggest positive 5x5 impact in 2023? Looking for near-term impact / best shot at playing time, not necessarily highest ultimate ceiling.

        Thanks as always!

I'm not real excited about Gomez. He didnt make any team top 10 lists. BA's report says he has double plus power but is a below-avg hitter, runner and defender and that he has a chance to be a backup or platoon player.

Among those 3 SPs, I think Pfaadt has the most potential impact for this year. Pfaadt might be the first option for a replacement in the DBacks' rotation. Stone is about as good a prospect as Pfaadt but has a more difficult task cracking the Dodgers rotation. Gonsolin is supposed to be back soon and Buehler might be back at some point. Abel probably doesnt figure to see much time in MLB this year.

Just thought I'd post this here instead of starting a new thread (which I may do at some point). I'll preface this point by saying that I dont think I've ever ranked an amateur player as high on this list as I have Dylan Crews (soon to be no. 6 because of graduations). In addition to everything else about his performance this year, he's currently hitting .531 (down from .543 just 2 days ago). He's doing this playing in the best conference in college (SEC), so against among the best pitching in the country. The NCAA record for highest batting average in a season is .551 by Keith Hagman of Univ. of New Mexico (I never heard of him either). I dont think he will break this record but the fact that he is still challenging this after half the college season is over is incredible. He also leads Div. 1 in OPB with .659 and is 3rd in slugging with .927. He has 31 walks and only 13 Ks. He is the consensus no. 1 talent in the upcoming draft (will the Pirates take him or cut a deal w a lesser talent?). My next list probably will be posted in early July just before the draft and I will give serious consideration to putting him no. 1 as an amateur.

The slot $ amount for the no. 1 pick this year is $9.721 mil. Pittsburgh may not want to pay this but if I'm the Pirates' GM and if I had a free hand, I'd consider this a bargain for Crews. Heck, they're paying Rich Hill $8 mil for just this year.

              Wow - that good, huh?

Our league prohibits acquiring players not currently in mlb or associated minor leagues. Would have considered Crews.

Yeah, there's only 1 of my leagues that allows this.

Rt now, assuming that Walker and Volpe each graduate, I think there are 5 candidates for no. 1 on my midseason list. I cant see making Elly De La Cruz the top guy, even tho he would be next in line, because, as much upside as he has, I think he is too risky. I certainly cant see making a pitcher the top guy for roto. The 5 would be Jackson Chourio, Jackson Holliday, Druw Jones, James Wood and Crews. Rt now, I might lean Holliday.

I just listened to a BA podcast where they said they'd rank Crews in the top 5 if he were eligible now. And that's w Carroll, Walker and Volpe still eligible. They specifically said they'd take him above Holliday and Wood. So basically, they're saying top 4 (along w Chourio, De La Cruz and Francisco Alvarez, who also might graduate) after the current MLBers graduate. That would put him in the top 3 on my list.

BTW, they also said they'd rank Paul Skenes w the top 3 pitching prospects (Grayson, Eury and Painter) and that they'd put him above Painter because of his injury.

I jumped early to grab Josue De Paula everywhere I could, 27th in dynasty, and 12/13 with Mervis in NL only. I've heard De Paula comped to Yordan Alvarez. I'm also big on Yasser Mercedes OF MIN and Carlos Jorge 2B CIN, grabbed a share of each.

I was surprised to see Edgar Quero C LAA skip A+ to AA.I heard he might be fast-tracked as a 1B due to below average catching skills (kinda like what I see for Yainer Diaz C/1B HOU, same path as Tyler Soderstrom, and possibly Endy Rodriguez, who has 2B/OF potential)

The guy I would bet jumps the most is Junior Caminero 3B TB (#91 on your list). I have him around 30th, but I bet he jumps to top 10-20 universally by the end of this year. Only 19 and pushed to A+ to start the year. First game he went 5-6 with a HR. I've seen 70 hit, 60 raw grades thrown on him. Could become an Arenado type 3B.
Larry David was once being heckled, long before any success. Heckler says "I'm taking my dog over to fuck your mother, weekly." Larry responds "I hate to tell you this, but your dog isn't liking it."

I picked Gavin Williams instead of Junior Caminero. Near term impact and needed some pitching help. Hope I don’t end up regretting that!

Great call. I have him too, picked him up with the 18th pick of our FYPD, because somehow he was not yet rostered. I've been following him so far, and he is on track to make your bold prediction a reality.

Yeah, Caminero has put up video game numbers. Tonight he hit 4-4 with 2 HR, taking his slash up to .500/.564/.862 with 4 HR through 8 games. Only 6 K in 39 PA too. Absolutely daring the Rays to try and delay his timeline.

I wish I owned him universally, but Frae snagged him in my AL only last spring. Maybe my endless rebuild in that league gives me the full set of Caminero shares this summer.
