    1) White was flat out terrible in 2012. An ERA around 6, a K/9 south of 6, and a BB/9 way north of 4. That last one's a killer at Coors Field.

    2) The Rockies viewed White as a malcontent. He was never on board with the funky four-man rotation experiment - I don't fault him for that - but his constant public complaining about it (and other rumored clubhouse politicking and grumbling) didn't endear him to the organization. He was deemed to not be a fit for the "character counts" culture they're trying to maintain. Take all that with the usual grain of salt.

    3) White was unlikely to crack the rotation this year. As bad as Colorado's starting pitching was last year, White's performance didn't place him in the running, barring the collapse of multiple starters in front of him on the depth chart. And he didn't want to pitch out of the pen. In fact, he might not even have found a place in The Rockies' bullpen, which is actually pretty stacked.

On the surface, it does seem odd to trade from an area of weakness to load up an area of strength. You can fault the club for not developing White properly, but, having given up on him, they were right to trade him before another dismal season in Colorado reduced his value any further (see Stewart, Ian). Personally, I like the return in Wilton Lopez, concerns about his elbow notwithstanding. Lopez' low walk rate and high ground ball ratio profile well in Colorado, and he's a cost-controlled asset that we can use (or trade at an opportune time) for the next three years.

This could be one of those trades that works out for both sides. Here's hoping...

"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."
"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master - that's all."

Cool, within that context it makes a ton of sense. I knew his numbers weren't good but I put that on being inexperienced. The attitude and complaining stuff I did not know. Sounds like the problems the D'Backs were having with Bauer.

            I hope so, too.

He missed all of last year due to injury but has "Five avg or better tools", according to Baseball America. Definitely a guy to keep on your radar in NL only leagues.
Silvero, whom the Marlins said has attended Florida International University, will likely open the season on the disabled list as he recovers from injuries sustained last year in a bad car accident.

But at some point in 2013, the Marlins plan to give him a look in center field. Barring any more major moves, that could mean that Justin Ruggiano opens the season in center field.

Silverio, 25, had a break-out season in 2011 for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Class AA Chattanooga, batting .306 with with 90 runs scored, 42 doubles, 18 triples, 16 home runs and 85 RBI in 132 games.

But on Jan. 23 of this year, he was involved in a one-car accident in the Dominican Republic. He suffered injuries to his back, shoulder, elbow, and neck. He reportedly was suffering concussion symptoms nearly six weeks after the accident.

“The Dodgers just showed me pictures of the car. He’s lucky he’s alive,’’ said Marty Scott, the Marlins’ vice president for player development.

Silverio missed the entire 2012 season recovering Tommy John surgery to repair an injury from the car accident. Scott recently saw him taking swings in a batting cage in the Dominican Republic but he hass not been cleared to throw yet.

“If we get him healthy as quickly as we can, not rush him, he’s a possible DL guy to start the year,” Scott said.

“He’s a project and you bring him in but tool-wise and the grades we had on him and the fact that he has recovered from the concussions and the Tommy John, it’s very promising.’’

It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

                        • Angels sign Blanton for $15 million

Needing starting help with Dan Haren departing for D.C. and Zack Greinke presumably too expensive to keep as well, the Los Angeles Angeles signed right-hander Joe Blanton for two years and $15 million, reports Mike DiGiovana of the Los Angeles Times. Soon to be 32 years old, Blanton has a 4.37 ERA in 228 career starts with the A's, Phillies and Dodgers. He finished 2012 with a 4.71 ERA, along with 166 strikeouts and 34 walks in 30 starts.

The deal that satisfies no one. I was hoping the Yankees would get Schierholz.
