According to Rotoworld, Cashman offered Pettitte a 12 million dollar deal back in December. Jeebus...12 million bucks? So much for trying to get below that luxury tax level...

I think the article implied that Cashman would have taken Pettitte for $12 million and then wouldn't have signed Kuroda. That's where that money went, so after he made those moves, the Yankees didn't have the cash to spring for Pettitte any more. Until he came to them at a ridiculously low price.
