  • The Closer Role/Mentality

I'm trying to find examples of top tier set up guys--stud 7th and 8th inning arms, who were given a shot at closing, but couldn't cut it in the 9th inning role, but once put back into the set up spots, regained their form as stud set up guys.

Can anyone help find me some examples?

    Thanks!
If I whisper my wicked marching orders into the ether with no regard to where or how they may bear fruit, I am blameless should a broken spirit carry those orders out upon the innocent, for it was not my hand that took the action merely my lips which let slip their darkest wish. ~Daniel Devereaux 2011

Wasn't that the word on Madson before this year? I think what you're looking for doesn't exist but I'll be interested to see how many examples are found.
If DMT didn't exist we would have to invent it. There has to be a weirdest thing. Once we have the concept weird, there has to be a weirdest thing. And DMT is simply it.

Arthur Rhodes strikes me as a prime example.

Those would have been my two as well. They're really aren't that many - the job isn't really that hard, which is why (in the regular season at least) the pct of SV converted isn't all that different for the bulk of closers.

tell that to Leo Nunez and Carlos Marmol

Yeah, he was the first guy that came to mind for me as well.

Latroy was the first guy I thought of as well. Didn't Farnsy have this tag for a long time? I think his issue was more with his HR tendencies than his head. Maybe Latroy is also a fly-ball guy and it's somehow related?

                      I think Farnsworth qualifies, yes.

Nunez's stuff is not that great, imo, while Marmol I suspect gets his mechanics/mind out of whack on occasion, but has the stuff where you ride it out.

Farnsworth qualifies as what? He's been one of the best closers this year.

Scot Downs is a pretty fantastic setup guy, but never could hold onto the closer's role when given the reigns.
Larry David was once being heckled, long before any success. Heckler says "I'm taking my dog over to fuck your mother, weekly." Larry responds "I hate to tell you this, but your dog isn't liking it."
