  • Marlon Byrd Out for the Year?

What a nasty HBP....broke his cheekbone and his nose. Says he "may be able to return this season." Sounds ominous.....

Brett Jackson would have been on his way next month but he's hurt with some sort of finger injury. Supposed to be back soon though.

He just jammed his pinkie. Supposed to only be out a week (as of last week), so... maybe soon?
In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

Rotoworld (Does not sound like a week)

Marlon Byrd (facial fractures) hopes to play again this season.
Byrd was released from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary on Sunday and later spoke to reporters. He was hit in the head by an Alfredo Aceves pitch on Saturday. Byrd is able to see out of his left eye, but it's swollen and bruised. There's no current timetable for his return. Reed Johnson and Jeff Baker should pick up at-bats in Byrd's absence.

Would they bring Colvin back up and give him another shot?

The "week" reference was to Jackson, not Byrd.

Oops. Reading comprehension apparently not my strong suit.

as CF? Or move Fukudome to CF?

Eventually, but possibly not this soon. He has only logged 4 games at Iowa since his demotion, so it may be deemed that he does not have enough ABs to have fixed his hitting issues yet. If the doctors confirm that Byrd will miss several months, I could see the Cubs jumping the gun and promoting Brett Jackson, who is hitting well in AA right now (.295/.420/.518/13 SB-2 CS). Brett was expected back from his pinky injury any day now. If Byrd could be back in 3-4 weeks, they might bring up Lou Montanez as a backup and let Reed Johnson and Tony Campana platoon in CF for now. I would go with Colvin myself.

a bit more about the Brett Jackson injury/recovery:

(quick summary: strained a ligament in his pinkie, at extended spring training now, should be playing again by the end of the week)

Looks like they think Jackson will be in AAA very soon which I assume Cubs mgmt would like him to stay at for a month or more before being called up to the majors.

Rick Brown of the Des Moines Register reported last night that it will indeed be Lou Montanez who gets the callup today. It is probably likely that either he or Campana will be sent down whenever the front office thinks that Brett Jackson is ready, but who knows when that moment will come.
