Latest is M's chipping in $20m in cash and taking on Bruce & Swarzak, leaving the Mets to cover $60m for Cano and whatever Diaz gets in arbitration.

Won't they be covering 100M for Cano then?

        Cano is owed $120m
        M's include $20m
Total M's side is $100m traded away

        Bruce is owed $28m
        Swarzak is owed $8.5m
Total Mets side is $36.5m traded away

So Mets would take on $63.5m + Diaz's salary.

I don't hate the trade for either side but I don't think it makes the Mets serious contenders and weakens their future. Diaz is an excellent closer but other closers were available in free agency. Will Cano be enough help on offense to get them to the playoffs? Can he keep people healthy? They need a lot of things to make them a good team.

I understand this deal much more now for the Mariners. I thought they were including 60 mil, not 20. Makes a lot more sense on their end now giving up the best young closer in the game and taking on Bruce.

Cards beat reporter Derrick Goold says there is "heavy momentum" for a deal with Arizona for Goldschmidt, and it could be completed today. Jon Heyman says it's done.

There have been discussions, a source confirms, on a potential 3-way trade between the Mets, Yankees and Marlins that would bring J.T. Realmuto to Flushing and could send Noah Syndergaard to the Bronx.

And Joel Sherman says that’s the least likely scenario among 6 others. No way do the Mets deal Thor to the Bronx.

                      frankly, agreed.

Mets GM, who as an agent would have dealt extensively with NY beat guys, with a trial balloon to measure the seismic reaction of Mets fandom (which would be an 11). as likely as not that he's showing the Wilpons the ramifications as it is him wanting to make such a deal himself.

I'm not sure exactly what thread this fits in, but Cashman's recent Death Star quote is great:

“If something doesn’t make sense today, it doesn’t mean it won’t make sense tomorrow. All I can tell you is where our current focuses are. But at the same time, we’re a fully functional Death Star.”

I have a vision of Cashman Force-choking Rob Manfred while saying "I am altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further."
I'm just here for the baseball.

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein recently had a "lengthy" meeting with Bryce Harper's agent, Scott Boras.
Wittenmyer writes that Epstein urged Boras and Harper "to wait before accepting an offer from another team until the Cubs had a chance to try to move some payroll off the books and check again with ownership."

Who would the Cubs move to shed payroll?
