Here's the story on the humidor...MLB shut it down for this season.

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have discontinued work on the humidor at Chase Field after being told by Major League Baseball that it could not be used this season.

    Who needs it, anyway?

If the idea was to normalize conditions in a proven hitter’s park, the D-backs have found their own way.

The D-backs have a 3.35 team ERA this year, second in the majors behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, and their 3.44 home ERA ranks third. Robbie Ray is fourth in the league in ERA. Zack Greinke is seventh, and Taijuan Walker would be in the top 12 (3.50 ERA) if he had enough innings to qualify. The D-backs led the majors with a 5.09 ERA and a 5.54 home ERA last year.

The D-backs announced in spring training that they hoped to have a humidor, similar to the one installed in Colorado in 2002, in place by late June. However, the intricacies of construction pushed the timeline too far back to suit the league office.

“The goal was to have this in place a lot sooner,” general manager Mike Hazen said.

“We did run into some calibration issues along the way, and we are too deep in the season at this point. We totally understand where we are.”

The D-backs are not abandoning the project, however, and plan to have the unit operational next season, but they will shelve work on it until the offseason.
