  • Should a penalty be incurred for an extended Jose Fernandez?

    Our commish had extended Jose Fernandez to $25. Our rules state if you decide to not keep a guy you extend you have to eat half of his contract. He dropped him and it doesn't look like he took the penalty.

    Is this wrong? Is it crazy and morally wrong to question this?

    I think you have to let it be. It's not like a DL stint.

      "The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
      It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
      Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;
      It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
      'Tis mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes
      The throned monarch better than his crown;
      His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
      The attribute to awe and majesty,
      Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
      But mercy is above this sceptred sway;
      It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
      It is an attribute to God himself;
      And earthly power doth then show likest God's
      When mercy seasons justice."

      in other news, make a league rule on what the exceptions are. just death? how about dismemberment? career ended by injury due to preventing terrorist attack?

      or you can make the rule "NO EXCEPTIONS." as long as the league owners agree.....

        Our rules state you have to pay the penalty to terminate a long-term contract only if the player is still affiliated with a team in the league. Fernandez is no longer part of the Marlins' organization.

        Are the Marlins still paying his contract?
        Some people say winning isn't everything. I say those people never won anything.

        Quitters never win, winners never quit, but those who never win AND never quit are idiots.

        The last thing I want to do is hurt you...but it's still on the list.

          I will probably let it be or hope someone else says something. I've had guys get injured and not play any longer, guys get put out of the majors. All equal the same result. Not playing in the majors any longer and able to contribute. It was a risk I took when I chose to extend them.

              I think it's an opportunity to acknowledge this and have the constitution amended/clarified.

              Personally, I think I'd have an out clause in the case of death or retirement.

              Ottawa Triple Eh's | P.I.M.P.S. | 14 team keep forever
              Champions 16,21 | Runner up 17,19-20

              The FOS (retired) | MTARBL | 12 team AL 5x5
              Champions 01,05,17 | Runner up 13-15,20

                Absolutely not.

                Now the real question would be, what if someone had an extension on Prince Fielder. That is worth a discussion. He retired but is still under contract.
                I'm unconsoled I'm lonely, I am so much better than I used to be.

                      We specifically make a rule for that in RJEL where extensions on deceased players will not be imposed; but even if we didn't, as commish I would never enforce it.

                        Our Rule is
                        AL only League:

                        Contract is terminated for:
                        Trade to NL
                        Death.
                        Retirement

                        All others Have to be Honor/pay Penalty,

                        Just had it happen - someone gave Billy Burns 2 years after 2015 season and when he got sent down to Minors last week he had to Pay the Half his contract penalty yesterday in the draft.

                        Jose would just be dropped .

                          It sounds like more people than I thought are in favor of an exemption. I guess it should be then. I'd assume more than 1 person in our league would want it to be waived so no sense in making it a point to question it. Best to let it be I think.

                            Nothing wrong with sending a message agreeing with the commish and suggesting they add to the rules what Hacko says his league lists as reasons for a contract to be terminated.

                              Yeah, we use the death or retirement exception too--prompted by Darrl Kyle, if I recall correctly. There was some debate about retirement, but everyone agreed on death.
