FWIW, our league gives no relief from retirement (I still *love* Billy Wagner for signing a two-year contract, getting me to do the same, then later acknowledging that both he and the team knew he would retire after one year) or anything else except death, which automatically voids any contract. It is tricky to use "retirement"--for example, Prince Fielder is not officially retired, even though he effectively is. (He'll sit on the DL and take the money for a few more years.)

        Yes, just taking deferred money.

Darryl Kile also had this happen. Also a minor league player a couple years ago. It is rare, but not without precedent and it will unfortunately happen again sometime.

No. He is officially listed as a free agent.

But many players never officially retire.

In my Al only home league: rules: players on our active rosters have to be on an AL major league roster. For the reserve list, they must be under contract with an American League team. If a player is waived and not picked up, retired, or dies, he wouldn't meet our requirement and could be dropped without penalty.

Did Rickey Henderson officially retire? Is that information out there somewhere?
