FWIW, our league gives no relief from retirement (I still *love* Billy Wagner for signing a two-year contract, getting me to do the same, then later acknowledging that both he and the team knew he would retire after one year) or anything else except death, which automatically voids any contract. It is tricky to use "retirement"--for example, Prince Fielder is not officially retired, even though he effectively is. (He'll sit on the DL and take the money for a few more years.)

In my Al only home league: rules: players on our active rosters have to be on an AL major league roster. For the reserve list, they must be under contract with an American League team. If a player is waived and not picked up, retired, or dies, he wouldn't meet our requirement and could be dropped without penalty.
