  • Is Derek Jeter Done?

    his BA isn't gawd-awful at .250; his OBP isn't gawd-awful at .318. Buuuuuuut:

    - he has 26 hits, and 24 of them are singles. The other two are doubles.
    - 11 of those 26 hits are infield singles
    - His SLG% is .269
    - His OPS has plunged through the floor (.580, 62 OPS+)
    - His GB% is a whopping 72%, while his LD% has plunged to just 12%
    - but most accounts, he's just not catching up with fastballs any longer
    - since the beginning of 2010, he's hitting just .267 with a .356 SLG
    - since last year's All Star Break, he has just 2 HRs

Jeter will be 37 next month. If he continues to hit in this non-productive fashion, how long until either a) the Yankees drop him to 9th, or remove him as the everyday starter; or b) Jeter bows out gracefully.

I think he'll bounce back to potentially last year's level of play, but I think that's the best anyone can hope for at this point.

and the Yankees have 3 more seasons of a contract to pay for? He's hit 1 ball over the fence in his last 544 plate appearances. That's more telling...especially with that swing of his in that home park. Just let him take PEDs already so he can stop this Steve Carlton path to retirement

I hate to say it, but it certainly looks that way. The Yankees tried to help him adjust his swing during ST, but he didn't like it and went back to the old, crappy way after like 4 games.

I didn't realize how much of his BB% would go away when pitchers stopped challenging him. He isn't going to be able to be a .270/.370/.370 guy.

Hopefully he will sink low enough that he's willing to try something new. But I don't think Girardi is going to move him to the bottom of the order. Jeter needs to volunteer.

It wouldn't bother me so much if he didn't just a sign a massive 3 year deal. All great players are allowed to have a decline, but not many get paid 50 million a year in the process. Either way, he has given so much to this team that, as a fan, its tough to complain.

And we can't even stick him in the OF because his bat is so weak.

hilarious that the yankees are so concerned about tip-toeing around the ego of mister "it's all about winning" that they're petrified of making obvious baseball decisions to improve the team.

Maybe they should just trade for Jose Reyes and tell Jeter he's now in a DH platoon with Jorge.

That would be a two-headed DH with no H in it.

3 for 3 with a HR so far today. 10 for his last 25. 7 for 16 since this thread.

ETA: Make that 4 for 4 with two HR's today, and the second best BA on the team behind Cano. That's not so much an endorsement of Jeter as it is an indictment of the Yanks offense right now.

For the record, I'm as surprised by Jeter's day as anyone.

Some people say winning isn't everything. I say those people never won anything.

Quitters never win, winners never quit, but those who never win AND never quit are idiots.

Clearly he must've read this thread and got really PO'd.

Full disclosure: I acquired Jeter for peanuts in two of my 3 leagues the last two weeks. Thanks fellers!

Fools Gold Ed, homering off Dave Bush does not make for a turnaround. His fly ball rate is still atrocious, and his bat is still slow. It's hard to get much of a BA when more than 2/3rds of the balls you hit are on the ground.

If there's anything we've learned in the last 10 years, it's that facing Dave Bush tends to improve one's stats tremendously.
