He still gets a $10 mil buyout for 2017.

Howard was the last member of the Phillies still remaining from the 2008 championship team.

They will have someone from that team in uniform next year, however, as they hired Matt Stairs as hitting coach.

Will miss him as a Jays fan. Disappointed all the uneducated fans basically ran him out of town.

Loved having him in the pen the past few years, but 4 years and $30M... that's a lot for a 7th inning guy.
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

Again, fans have to understand that this is the new normal. The game is SWIMMING is money, and the players are still getting too little of it, IMO. I'd rather watch a guy busting it every day with phenomenal skills getting paid, than an old businessman who owns a team as a lark, but runs it like a business that demands a huge profit margin.

Jason Castro to the Twins a couple days ago. 3 years 24.5M

Then I see this in a chat today at Fangraphs

CarrotJuice: Give me your hottest take on Castro signing!

Dave Cameron: If the team that employs Mike Fast isn’t interested in bringing you back, maybe your framing value isn’t as likely to continue as the Twins are hoping.

LOL...apparently, Astros management prefers the old school of "catcher smash ball" at the receiver position.

Not crazy about Castro, but it's better than last year with Suzuki...

Rumor right now is Edwin to Texas, 4 years, 100M

edit: a friend sent me that but I can't find anything anywhere on it, so it's probably just someone messing around

I'm a little surprised he chose to go to Atlanta. He had a breakout 2016 season (in his 9th MLB season) and I would've figured he could land a full-time job somewhere. Seems like he's now destined to be a super-utility guy without a full-time spot.

Brewers to non-tender Chris Carter, this despite leading the NL in HRs with 41.

                        Marlins sign Edinson Volquez.

Yoenis Cespedes stays with the Mets on a 4 year, $110m deal.

The Brewers sign Eric Thames, who emerged as a star in the Korean League, to a 3 year deal. He will take over for Carter at 1B.

interesting, I was thinking that there wouldn't be any significant signings before the CBA issues got resolved, but apparently not the case.

$27.5M per year is a very big number.

Yeah, but he was under contract for almost $24m and two more years had he stayed, so it's not a big raise.

Matt Joyce to the A's on a 2yr/$11M deal. He'll get every PA vs the RHP and ride the pine vs lefties, but he's an above average player vs RHP whose numbers get pulled down because teams give him at bats vs lefties.
