  • RHD's Latest Top 150 Roto Prospects ("MLB Draft Day" Edition)

Here's the latest version of my list. Nine soon-to-be draftees are listed, altho most are in a "sticky" spot near the bottom. I'll probably be adding more draftees soon after I learn more about some of them.

Same spiel as usual: I generally follow BA's prospect eligibility requirements, which are <=130 MLB AB or <=50 MLB IP. Unlike BA tho, amateurs, unsigned draftees and foreign players are eligible. Also, while BA has a different IP limit for relievers (30 IP?), relievers are eligible as long as they dont have >50 IP. As usual, this is for roto, not 'real' baseball, so pitchers are downgraded some, catchers downgraded somewhat (unless they're elite prospects and their bat will play at any position), and actual closers are upgraded a lot, SB guys who project to get playing time get upgraded some, and guys who either currently are or project to soon be regulars can get upgraded quite a bit. Position listed is their current primary one to the best of my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong), not the one they're likely to end up at.

In addition to posting the list here, I've created a Google Doc that has the list. Link:

Great fun as always, rhd. Thanks for posting.

I can pick my prospects with eyes closed (they're the ones that have fallen farthest on this list!). Thank you very much, Micah Johnson and Jesse Winker!

Thanks, rhd. Your threads are my favorite part of this site.

Any thoughts on Eddy Julio Martinez? Seen some baseball folks rave about him..

I love your posts, but are you becoming too reactionary to MLB roster moves? For instance, Delino DeShields was a Rule V pick, so he's not the prospect he once was, but he has had some initial success at the MLB level. Is he anything more than a Jarrod Dyson type taking advantage of his playing time, or do you believe many may have misjudged him? Is he a long-term answer or a flash in the pan?

I understand this is a roto list, which is great, but do MLers who get called up get a major boost up the list?

          Thanx for the response, revo.

Reactionary? I guess so but you have to be to a large extent. Playing time is one of the most important things in roto. If I already had a player ranked relatively high on the list, if he figures to get major MLB playing time he has to shoot up the list. Doesnt apply to guys like Hanser Alberto who was just a fringe prospect and doesnt figure to have a significant MLB role. DeShields has been a much maligned guy over the past few years but I kept him on my list the whole time because I thought he had a reasonable chance to get playing time and he has major SB potential. Now he is starting and performing pretty well at least from a roto standpoint. I have him producing about $18 worth of value in one of my leagues. And what OFer in the Rangers' system that is nearly ready for MLB is any better? So he'll continue to play as long as he produces. Even as a 4th OFer he's still valuable a la Dyson/Rajai/Gose. Whatever you think of his long-term value he is a very desirable roto commodity rt now. Arguably, I should have him even higher. I dont know if he'll keep it up but he's always had talent and you have to play the hot hand. Ditto w Billy Burns ($14 worth of value), who no longer is eligible. REally this the list is mostly the same as it always was, which is personal list of who I'd take in what order to help my roto team. Guys like DeShields and Burns can help you win a title so they get ranked high.

Were people wrong about DeShields? I dont know but makeup concerns were one of the big reasons people got down on him. I tend to think makeup concerns often are overblown and I tend to discount these unless there is concrete evidence that you can point to like arrests/convictions or drug suspensions.

Frankly I've never heard of him. He's not listed on BA's Top 500 draft prospects. What do you know about him?

20-year-old Cuban OF, who MLB Pipeline recently named it's #1 international prospect. http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2015?list=int

                Here's their write-up:

"Eddy Julio Martinez | Rank: 1 Hometown: Cuba, Las Tunas
Position: OF Age: 20 DOB: 1/18/1995
                Bats: R Throws: R Height: 6'2" Weight: 195 lb.
                VIDEO
                Scouting grades: Hit: 60 | Power: 60 | Run: 70 | Arm: 60 | Field: 60
Think a young Andruw Jones. That's how some scouts have described the 20-year-old center fielder from Cuba. Evaluators like his body -- described as solid and compact -- and his athleticism. But there's a lot more to like.

In the batter's box, Martinez has a quick and compact power stroke. He's shown the ability to hit home runs to all fields and work the counts. He's speedy out of the box and shows base-stealing potential. Described as "hard-nosed," Martinez is aggressive and not afraid to take an extra-base.

Martinez has shown good instincts on defense and the ability to cover the gaps in the outfield. Those skills combined with a playable and accurate arm make scouts believe he will stay in center field and could be in the big leagues in after a couple of seasons in the Minor Leagues. Scouts also like that Martinez has experience playing for Cuba's junior national teams in Mexico and Venezuela and that he spent two seasons with Las Tunas in Cuba's Serie Nacional, the island's top league.

Martinez, who was declared a free agent by Major League Baseball in May, is eligible to sign. However, it is unclear if he will sign during the current international signing period or wait until the next period that begins on July 2. He is currently training in the Dominican Republic.

The Cubs, Yankees, Angels, Blue Jays, Nationals, Rockies, Tigers, Dodgers, Giants and White Sox are among the teams that have expressed serious interest in Martinez."

Chris Crawford (BP) today in his chat said the following:

"Eric (NY): Who not in this draft is the next big thing? Vlad Guerrero Jr? Someone else?

Christopher Crawford: Eddy Julio Martinez. The kid is a special, special, special talent. Note that I usually only use two specials for the really special ones. He has a chance to be...well...special."

"Festivus313 (Phoenix): Where would Eddy Julio Martinez, Yadier Alcarez, Norge Ruiz and Lucius Fix rank for you in this draft if eligible?

Christopher Crawford: Martinez would be at 1, Fox would be in the top 10, I don't have enough on the other two to give a concrete answer. Sorry."

"Silverback38 (VA): Is Lourdes Gourriel the best international hitting prospect or can you think of someone better?

Christopher Crawford: Martinez to me has more upside offensively, but Gourriel is also awful good."

"Mike (Cali): Is Eddy Julio Martinez the next Puig?

Christopher Crawford: Maybe, the centerfield version though. I've heard Andruw Jones comps, and those make a lot of sense."

"Craig (New Jersey): Eddy Julio Martinez or Yoan Moncada

Christopher Crawford: Moncada, but just barely."

Lots of love from both sources, so I'm trying to figure out how potentially valuable he might end up being.

Thanx for that, Onions. Didnt realize he was Cuban. But BA doesnt list him in their top 20 still-in-Cuba prospects either. Kiley McDaniel doesnt list him in his July 2 prospects either. In fact, I couldnt find anything about him on either the BA or FG website. And I dont know anyone that knows Cuban guys more than BA's Ben Badler, and Kiley seems to have good knowledge about these guys, too. But the other guys listed in MLB's top 10 are listed in BA's list. I'm not familiar w Christopher Crawford but maybe he's scooped this guy. I'll add him to my list.

Thanx again. I must have missed that comment by Kiley, which could have been easy to do since it looks like a short comment and he produces so much content. But I'll wait until I hear more about him before I add him to the Top 150. Sorry that I had no info for you.

"Craig (New Jersey): Eddy Julio Martinez or Yoan Moncada

Christopher Crawford: Moncada, but just barely."

Lots of love from both sources, so I'm trying to figure out how potentially valuable he might end up being.
Ben Badler at BA just today posted an update on Cuban players which includes a segment on Martinez. He's not nearly so optimistic about him as a prospect as Crawford and Sanchez are, altho he says he's a solid prospect. Here's the link to this piece, altho it's subscriber-only:

Out of curiosity, where did Badler think Martinez would have gone if available in this year's draft?

He specifically said that he didnt want to do this w/o having seen him personally. He did say that he would take all of the first 8 Cuban players he listed in this article above Martinez, His list seems to be in general order of rank and the player immediately above him was Yusnier Diaz who he said would be in the #137 range of their Top 500 Draft prospects. He also said Martinez has never shown much power, has slightly above avg speed, a good but not great arm and that scouts are mixed on whether he'll stick in CF. He also says he's only 5'10", not 6'2" as listed at MLB.com.
