  • Anybody own a GoPro camera?

My daughter wants one for Christmas. I know what they are and about all of the attachments. What I don't know is about how well they work underwater, which is what she really wants it for. Also, she wants to make movies, and use the GoPro Studio software to do it, as that is free software.

    Thoughts?

they work great for amateur porn, but I can't speak to underwater

They work pretty well underwater, but depending on what kind of movie she wants to make, it's pretty limited. You've got a huge wide angle and nothing else...it's nice tool to have, but a regular camera is needed to do most of the rest of filming.

But they're pretty cheap now, and GoPro is coming out with a reduced price version to combat the new Polaroid camera that's just coming out for 99 buck, IIRC.

She just wants to take video of fish and put it to music for her first attempt at video editing. We have plans to go to the Caribbean over spring break, and that is where she will hopefully get her footage for her "movie".

Then the GoPro will be just fine...remember that you may have to buy the underwater housing separately.

What kind of computer does she have? Apple movie is a great, simple system if she's got a Mac...

We have Mac and a PC. She could do iMovie whenever, but she has it in her head that she wants to do this fish thing as her first "movie".

That's cool, I was just suggesting that IMovie would be a great editing platform for her fish movie, but if she wants to use the GoPro app, more power to her. She can actually use both and see what she likes better...she should be able to import the GoPro video into the Mac with no problem. We've got a guy at work who edit's his kids Hockey league season ending video, and he uses multiple sources, including GoPro cameras, imported into IMovie.
