it is strange to have someone fired for cause and then allowed to continue for any period, much less 30 days. i've never heard of it, nor has my wife who's been working in HR for 25 years.

It's would be a major red flag for me. If something like that happened at my employer, I would start looking for work elsewhere ASAP, as it's a clear sign that upper management is clueless.
