Microsoft to buy Minecraft for 2.5 BILLION dollars.

Even if you don't play this game - and I don't, though I own a copy - you must have heard of it....... even my kids use it in school as part of their classes.

Think about that..... a game that was made with 8 bit graphics, and basically the creation of a single man, gets sold for 2.5 Billion dollars. By MSFT, who will likely have it messed up within a year.

They're buying the company that developed Minecraft, not just the game itself.

My 7-year old plays it non-stop with all his buddies on Xbox. I've been playing video games since I was 6-years old and I don't really see the appeal of this game, but I'd rather he play this than GTA V.

Well, yes, BUT, really that company pretty much is that game, and a few key people.... and the game creator is rumored to be leaving if the deal closes.

If I said Mojang - the company - can you name any other game they are involved in without looking it up? I couldn't, so I did look it up..... and I never even heard of the 2 other games they are involved in.

I don't actually get the Minecraft phenomena. As someone who has played 100's of hours of Civ over the years, I probably should ... but I don't.

It's pretty much the perfect game for young kids. Very accessible learning curve. Perfect for creativity and imagination without having to follow a bunch of rules. It reminds me vaguely of the original Sim City, actually.

quick teacher suggestion

Once your kids become minecraft fluent - about age 8-10 - get them to learn Sketchup

Sketchup is free - harder to use -but is also a real drawing and building tool
