  • I Ran A Marathon...

So just about two years ago my wife decided she wanted to run a 5K. I had not run a 5K since I was about 12 and told her I would run with her. So in 2012 I ran a 5K, which lead me to wanting to run a 10K that fall. I had lost some weight and felt better about myself so I figured I'd try a half marathon. The half went really well and in the spring of 2013 I ran a 1:42:49 half marathon. I had a minor hip issue after the run, but at this point I knew I wanted to try the full. I signed up for a fall one in 2013 in Columbus. 5 weeks before the race I suffered a calf injury that was probably a blessing. I was going to have to run that one alone and without my family able to go. Instead I signed up for Pittsburgh. So last Sunday after 4 months of training and one foot injury that then led to one massive blister I was at the starting line.

No matter how much I train I don't think I'll ever feel ready for a marathon and being my first one I felt incredibly unprepared. I had done the 18 and 20 mile runs, but still I had no idea how my body would handle 26.2 miles. For 15 miles I was in great shape, sitting at 8:35 miles and not feeling too bad. Somewhere between 15 and 17 I started to lose a lot. I fought through it, but I could tell trouble was ahead. At mile 20 I hit a wall and had an 11 minute mile. I got myself back together and threw a few 9:30 miles in there to go with some 10's. I saw the 4 hour pacer, my goal, pass me by at mile 23. I told my legs to go, but they said are you crazy? So I watched that goal go by, but I wasn't going to quit. I struggled home, but managed to not walk the last 2 miles at all and shuffled on in. It was awesome and miserable at the exact same time. I did finish at 04:04:50, so there are 4:50 seconds left to shave off. I have already decided I'm doing another, gotta break that 4 hour barrier now. Anyway, if anyone else is out there who hasn't run in forever it can be done and there are times when it is even fun

Way to go! And impressive time too. Anything near 4 hours is good! Furthest I've ever run is 7 miles and fastest I've run is a 5K at a 7:30 pace, but can't keep anything close to that up for a longer distance. Not sure my ankle/knee could do much more mileage - did you do any exercises to strengthen them, aside from just running a lot?

        frae, that is great.

I've done 4 5K's since November. Not really running but walking/jogging. My fastest time was around 49 minutes (I'm not in your league, obviously). One big problem I have is that I can't get my calf muscles to loosen up. They seem to be tight all the time and about a mile into a 5K they start screaming. I've been pushing through, but would love to overcome this issue.

I signed up for the Philly one in 2012. Was getting all ready to start the training and then was like, WTF? I have to run 26.2 miles to do a marathon? So I didn't really get much further than a 4 mile run once (then my wife got pregnant and we had baby things to do every weekend when I would have been training). I would definitely like to do it someday - just need to find the time to actually do the preparations.

But that's awesome, Frae. Nicely done.

            Congrats.

Running a marathon is something I will never do.
If DMT didn't exist we would have to invent it. There has to be a weirdest thing. Once we have the concept weird, there has to be a weirdest thing. And DMT is simply it.

              Me too!

Heck I am arguing with myself if I want to walk behind my lawn mower for an hour and half tonight.

But let me say congrats Mr. Frae on a job well done!

Well I had 3 ACL reconstructions in high school, so my knees are not exactly normal. I have never had ankle problems so I didn't really do anything there. I take fish oil, whether it helps or not who knows, but my knees have not bugged me during the running while I take it. I am no expert, but a slow build up in your running distance should allow your body to adjust. I did have a big foot issue, because I pronate, run on the outside of my foot, and I have a bunion as well as flat feet. The short story I saw an podiatrist and got an orthotic which eliminated that issue. Good luck!

If you don't have a foam roller i would recommend that. It helped a lot with my calf issues. I also did by a calf sleeve to wear on the one that was a particular problem and a pair of compression socks that I would wear after a long run. Good luck!

Nicely done! I was hoping to take my shot at breaking four hours last year, but was sidelined by an emergency appendectomy right when I hit 16 miles and about 5 weeks before the marathon I wanted to run. Your time is much better than my first one.

                    Congrats!

Well done Frae. I know how daunting long distance runs can be, so I'm quite impressed. A marathon is more than twice as far as I've ever run.

I got some folks bugging me to do a 5k in August. Many years ago, I would have wanted something longer to be a challenge. Now...whew...
Considering his only baseball post in the past year was bringing up a 3 year old thread to taunt Hornsby and he's never contributed a dime to our hatpass, perhaps?

I commend you, my friend! That's awesome!

Running to first base leaves me winded....so congrats!

Congrats Keith - I notice at last years Pony draft that you had lost some weight - I just thought you were overcompensating for having a Barbie doll laptop. By the way quick running and lets make a trade!!!!

I do not have a foam roller. I will look into it. I did buy some Tommy Copper compression sleeves that I wear a lot. (not sure they helped, but I bought them, so I'm going to wear them!)
